Storm Heading In–Thursday, November, 20, 2014

Yesterday afternoon the clouds started to skim across the sky stretching and cooling down everything under them.

Storm

Gradually they thickened and thickened, long  frontal cirrostratus(is that the correct name for snow producing clouds?)  clouds giving Terry and I the feeling that snow was about to happen.  Although, the weather people were saying not.

This morning we woke to clear skies and the ever present cold 17*.  But a storm is predicted to be in here for the weekend.

Today we are bright and sunny!  Still I can see those same  frontal cirrostratus clouds being pushed toward us over the Uncompahgre Plateau.  (Un-come-pah-gray—a Ute Indian word meaning: (take your pick; rocks made red by water, rocks that make water red, or just plain dirty water.  🙂 )  A winter storm is predicted to arrive here Friday night bringing with it snow for Saturday, Sunday and Monday. After that our daytime highs will shift down a notch from the mid 40’s to the mid 30’s.  The slide into the long, dark days of winter has begun.  And it’s early!  Those of you getting slammed with snow are very aware of that —-winter has arrived; albeit several weeks early.

The corn is still checking out dry on the top end of the field and very dry in the middle, but the bottom end is W.E.T.!  17%.  We continue to wait.  If this snow goes around us and isn’t too wet (right here) possibly the ends of the fields will dry down enough we can start on Monday, or Tuesday, or Wednesday…hummm, next week sometime.  🙂

I thank each one of you for your continued concern and encouraging words and magic thoughts that soon, very soon, the corn dries down enough we can get this years harvest in.

I Flew to the Moon —-June 16, 2014

SilverRemember back in March when I posted the fact that I love the Wind?  Well, I still do.  BUT….I am getting a tad tired of it.

We are having lots of wind! Usually it starts slowing down in the late afternoon; stopping by nightfall.  But not last night…the wind blew all day yesterday…not the fun, playful kite flying winds, or the gentle soap bubble blowing breezes, but the kind that slams doors shut in the house, lifts curtains to flap and snap in the bedrooms.  We are to have (yet) another day of such nonsense and then another day with 40 m.p.h. gusts lifting anything that is not nailed down up into the air and then dropped somewhere not close by.

Walk-in-the-moonlightStill the wind didn’t stop the moon light from bursting forth from behind the leaves…shining brilliant silver light upon the night-scaped land. It ruffled the dogs’ fur…making them look like little rag-a-muffins as we walked along.

Breaking-throughDuring the day the wind caused the clouds to shift and scuttle across the brilliant shining sky.

So far we are not too cold, although a nasty cold front is due in here on Wednesday. If it doesn’t stall we will start to warm back up on Thursday. One day of potential snow in the mountains.

Baby A baby water snake slithered out on the gravel to warm up…soaking the heat from the soil into his/her scales.  This little snake didn’t stay long, the wind ruffled even it’s little scales.

Roubidoux-2

Then suddenly, I was lifted up into the air, flung wildly into the heavens!

The view was stunning!

The wind shifted the clouds here and there…causing sun-rays to stream through the gathering  mass of condensed water vapor floating in our atmosphere, lighting up the Uncompahgre Plateau and the canyon just below our mesa…the Roubidoux.!

It was so beautiful I am sure the stars even sung!

RoubidouxThere is much joy in every day, isn’t there.

Closer to Real Spring March 6, 2014

A few clouds have arrived in our area, the high, way up there, WAY, WAY up in the air winds pushing the clouds from somewhere in the far west…California to Utah and then to us..to fill our sky blocking the warming rays of the sun.

SunsetWhen the dogs and I went for our mid-night walk the stars were out and the sky was brilliant with their sparkling beauty.  I almost tripped as I walked along with my head tiled back trying to find the different constellations…there was the Big Dipper (always very easy to see) I use it as my mooring point.

Around 8 o’clock in the evening it is in the east, then after mid-night sinking under the rim of Grand Mesa in the north west.

SunlightI really can’t remember the names of any of the others anymore, although, I used to know…way back when I was in high school —centuries ago.

LightToday we are a cold and cloudy late winter day. A jacket wearing day.  At least right now.  Maybe later we will warm up…only time will tell.

SmilesYesterday was warm enough that the dogs spent most of it panting (and smiling).  Terry and I worked without jackets in the afternoon–it was that warm…if you kept moving.  He is building a irrigation box…one of the ditches that enters our place has created a huge hole in the ground…the hole works, but water keeps eroding it so the hole just keeps getting bigger and bigger.  A cement box will with stand the constant of water and protect the earth around the ditch.  We always want to protect the land.  At the same time make our work load a little easier.

I got the wood pile sorted and stacked for next year…green wood here, dry wood there, and all the sticks and weeds and leaves under the wood racked.

I have a old pile of junk wood I need to sort and cut and get it in the firewood pile so I can use it up next winter.  The old pile is made up of tree limbs, rotted off fence posts, an old building we tore down…junk wood, but we don’t want to just throw in a heap and burn it sending smoke spiraling into the air…we want to utilize it as heat for the house.  So I continue to sort and cut and stack.

Other than ordinary everyday things nothing much going on here.

It’s Still Raining Here February 10, 2014

We went from days and days of this

Sam-and-Snow

to two days of rain and warmer weather, which produced this

Rain

But yesterday, we were on the Uncompaghre Plateau (Un-come-pah-gray) enjoying the snow.

We had a great time at Max’s place.  He had his roads all packed down so we could sled and sled and sled.

FunEveryone went, Max, Terry, Misty and Kelly, all the little kids and even me!

Up and down most of the day we went.  Then when the little one was getting tired and cranky and whiny we stopped and cooked hot dogs and marshmallows in Max’s fire pit.

DownMax and Grandpa even proved to the little ones, you are never to old to go down a hill fast

Grandpa-Sleds

I must admit that when we got home, Terry and I took an hour long nap.  We were a little tired.  I called the grandchildren later and the only person who took a nap was their Dad.

Today is cloudy and overcast and raining; but later on in the week we are supposed to hit 59-60* with sun.  Sun!!! Sun helps dry up all the rain.  WHOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!

Winter Rain

We are having the oddest weather for January.  Weather more along the line of July.  An unusual warm air mass has funneled itself up from the Gulf of Mexico, giving us RAIN.

Rain

Friday we were rather warm with heavy fog, the weatherman was calling an inversion.  Fog-4But we never cooled down to below zero, instead we stayed warm…22* all that day, into the night, and even into the next morning.

Fog-2

Visibility was very poor.

Then the weather people started telling us about the odd weather pattern we were now in.

Fog-3

Fog is beautiful.

We see very little fog here.  As a child I was always fascinated that (for us, here in the high mountain desert) when we have fog it is really a cloud sitting down and surrounding us.  Living in a cloud made me feel rather ethereal—light, airy, not earth-bound.  It still does.

Then it started to rain…a very wet drizzle, you could walk in it for thirty minutes before getting soaked, but very steady.  On and on it rained, all day, all evening, all night, until about 4 in the morning.  Then it stopped.  But the heavy fog didn’t leave.

Fog-1

Visibility, as I write this is 1/4 of mile.  We are surrounded in cloud.  It isn’t raining …. yet.

Warmer

But it could start.

Fog-5

It might snow!  The water guys are saying that it is snowing in the San Juan’s and up at Gunnison. That is good news.  I hope it dumps FEET of very wet snow!  🙂

For FEET of snow I can enjoy living in a Cloud!  🙂 🙂

Tuesday, December 18, 2012

Yesterday a very brisk, cold wind blew the clouds out of the way, leaving us with a very, VERY crisp day.

This morning we are in another winter weather storm watch.

BUT…look at this!!!

As the wind was blowing one storm away from us I saw an extremely rare site.

(At least for me in this part of the world)

A winter rainbow in the west…

Winter-Rainbow

I was extremely trilled!

December 17, 2012

I’m getting a tad tired of all the clouds

Snow-MaybeAlthough, there is snow on the mountains and around us.

Dreary is well….dreary!

But today…this morning…I CAN SEE SOME SUN…so I’m heading out for a walk.

Happy Monday!!!

Linda

What Is This?

Late last evening as we were finishing up the last set of water I happened to glance into the sky and saw this

It must be some sort of reflection of the setting sun on the near-by clouds, for sure it wasn’t a rainbow.

Rainbows occur with the sun behind you and the rain clouds before you.  But this was next too the sun, both of them in the west.

If we were in the months of either January or February I would say it was a sun dog, but this is August.

The sky is so amazing…many thing of wonder are in the heavens just like down here on the earth.  You just have to look for them.

Have a wonderful Sunday,

Linda

This One’s for You

This-One's-For-You

There is something just absolutely amazing about the sky lately. And I have seen on other people’s blogs you are seeing it too.  Maybe it is because we are leaving summer and moving into fall, or maybe it is something else.  But the sky is really a wonder to behold.

A Cloud Full of Rainbows

Working in the yard last night I looked up into the sky and saw….

Rainbow-Cloud

A cloud full of rainbows!  Absolutely amazing!

Cloud-of-rainbows

I just had to share this with you.
