Good Fences, Spring Farm Work, and Rain—Thursday, March 19, 2015

It rained off and on yesterday and then some into the night. The sun is out, our air is fresh and lovely, my lawn(s) are starting to green up, and I have lots of plants popping up in the flower beds!  Life is good!

Plowing-1Terry plowed until it got too wet.  So far there isn’t enough rain to cause our clay type of soil of harden into bricks.

Years ago we had a brick and tile making company that used our clay soil to make bricks.  Today those bricks are much sought after as a collector item.  That’s our type of soil…also our worry about rain.

You can read about it here:  Delta Brick and Tile Factory

Anyway, so far so good.

Theresa from The Run*A*Round Ranch Report always hosts Thursday Good Fences and Gates.  Sometimes I have neat fence, gate or gate opener to add to the fun postings on Thursday.  Today I have one—–

Scratching-PostThis is a scratching post on our place.  Terry put it up for the cows…a nice back scratch is always good!

Head on over to Teresa’s place and see her photos, then visit some of the other participants for a look at their cool fences and gates.

I hope each of you have a really nice day!

Good Fences and Gates—Thursday, January 22, 2015

Teresa hosts a Good Fences and Gates every Thursday, which is always lots of fun. Her post today has a beautiful Texas sized Gate complete with stunning art work.

GateWhen we were up working on the artery ditch (that takes off from the headgate) I thought I would show you a very functional/typical gate here on our farm—- and most of the farms around us who have cattle.  Looks just like the fence.

OPenYou have to slip a wire off the top pole to open the gate, then lay the gate down flat (or it will get in a huge tangle); then you can drive through.

It isn’t pretty, folks!  But it does do the job!

For more gates and fences head over to Teresa site and check out they ones people have entered.  Better yet–take some photos of your own and link your site to hers!  All in good fun!

Linda

It’s Good Fences Thursday— June 19, 2014

(The white roses in my yard are beautiful right now)

I know this is weird, but I like cemeteries.  I love the feeling of peace and calm that prevails. If our town would have ever hired a woman as a caretaker for the cemetery I would have liked to be that person.

I like cemeteries so much I do research for people interested in getting a photo of a headstone in their family.  I also help find people who have lost the knowledge they have an empty plot in a local cemetery.

My children have grown up waling around with me looking for this headstone or that.  They have also grown up reading the headstones…some are very sad.

Delta is a fairly young town —established in 1883, so our stones only go back that far.

Every month I go to the two in our town, refreshing the the faded silks flowers I placed upon the many graves of family.

On my last visit I realized that the corner fences would work perfectly for The Run*A*Round Ranch’s Good Fences and Gates Thursday.

I felt that these corner fences do a nice job of keeping people off the grass and corralling the stone…:)  Just a joke…please don’t send hate email!

If you would like to visit Theresa and her many blogging friends and there fences (and gates) head over here.  While you are there post a fence or two of your own!  Good fences always make good neighbors; in this case neighbors from around the globe!

Good Fences and Gates — Thursday, June 5, 2014

Theresa over at the Run*A*Round hosts a Good Fences Thursday.  Hop over there and see what she has posted and then check out what other cool fences and gates are around the world.

Here is my contribution for this week….

CementIt looks like just and ordinary chain link fence, but if you look closely the posts are made of cement.  I liked the appeal  and the idea the posts were homemade.

You are all welcome to join in…just hop over to Run*A*Round Ranch and link your fence or gate post each Thursday.

Good Gates and Fences—-May 15, 2014

The Run*A*Round Ranch is hosting Good Fences and Gates on Thursday.  I’m about to run out of really cool fences here, but I do have a couple more of cool gates.  I’ll just show this one that I think is really cool on our place

gate-5

It’s the oldest gate and fence on our place.  Going way back before 1930.  Our farm has always been in Terry’s family.  Terry’s grandfather started a Dairy here (it was the first and only dairy in Delta for years.  Our farm is five miles from the edge of town …  to keep the smell and flies from bothering towns people.)

After his grandfather retired from the dairy, the farm then raised beef cows.  We purchased the farm from the estate and continued having cows ….we milked a cow for us, raised spring’n heifers for other dairies, and in the last beef cattle.  Now we are cowless, but our farm still is winter a home for beef cows.

So this fence and gate still does that same job it was created for many, many, years ago!

Head over to The Run*A*Round Ranch and check out all the fun and unusual fences and gates over there.

Good Fences and Gates

The Run *A* Round Ranch hosts a Thursday “Good Fences and Gates” , which I have found is a lot of fun.   If you would like to see The Run *A* Round Ranches cool fences swathed in Texas bluebonnets go here.  While you are visiting click on the others sites to see even more fun fences…fences from around the world.

Then take some photos of your fences and gates, and the fences and gates around your community and join the fun.

For my contribution I give you

gate-4

The Electric fence and the electric fence gate.  We have lots and lots of these all over our farm.  The twine is to warn you there is a strand of hot wire going across the road ….so STOP!

More than once I’ve seen a wagging dog tail get shocked.  It only takes once!  After that the tail is lowered way down to the ground as the dog cheerfully trots on to the next new smell or adventure.

Don’t forget….head over here to add your fences and gates to the list!
