Moving into the Heart of the Light—Thursday, July 13, 2017

A large portion of my day is spent on a ditch bank….somewhere, someplace, here on the farm

Morning, noon, evening…the earth, the sky, the water—moisture in the air..rain landing softly on the fields rich with good earth and lush plants

The sun captures so brilliantly the clift on the Uncompahgre Plateau where the Plateau starts to change and slope toward Grand Junction.  It’s close to this cleft where a person can descend into Gateway, Colorado

Lately the air has been restless; shifting, rising, flowing–heavy with moisture

Sometimes the sun is suspended in the western sky…blazing the horizon into a dazzling display of red, orange and yellow

I have no true favorite time of the sky…I love the luminous eastern sky’s violet when the final stars are gone.  The early sun turning from violet to pink then gold and

finally a robin’s egg blue

And the night-time full of the moon or the stars so brilliant it’s like being surrounded by diamonds

I (sometimes) think our lives have seasons…times when nothing seems to be happening…but, if we look close…there are many changes going on… we just forget to see them.

From my heart to your world,

Linda

Riding Straight into the Light—-Monday, June 26, 2017

We are gradually moving through the growing season.

The middle of this week we will be cutting the alfalfa (for the second time this year)

The swallows flit and dart through the air searching out bugs for breakfast, lunch, and dinner!  Keeping the mosquitoes at bay!

We are still having wind…sometimes a light breeze that stirs the leaves in the garden, sometimes a wind, which whips the branches of the trees, and sometimes a wind we can not see; stirring the clouds causing cloud shadows to move swiftly across our farm

This part of earth is truly full of peace.

All people — well, the majority of people—crave peace.

I find peace here…on this little dab of land…where dreams lift off the earth and rush toward the stars,

The swelling morning sun shouts “WAKE-UP”

And the red blaze of the western sun fills the evening sky.

Mother Earth, Father Sky…the infinite Universe…healer/scryer…the gift of peace.

Watching Very Hard—-Monday, June 19, 2017

For two days and two nights we got to have our youngest granddaughter.

She is amazing help.

Always willing to do something; whatever we are doing.  Always asking:  “is there anything I can do to help you—or can I help you Grandpa”?

She goes with us braving the mosquitoes and deer fly, plus those nasty biting little horse flies.

Taking her little red shovel— helping move the water down the rows– making that big warm farmer’s heart in her grandpa swell with pride.

Jumping carefully over the just sprouting pinto beans, we hear her laughing delightedly.

Then just before the dark closes  in completely she and grandpa would go for a fast, breath-catching four-wheeler ride, me following along behind….way behind so Boomer and I didn’t eat dust.  Clear to the Rocky Point, then home again.

Today we are back to just ‘ourselves’ and our normal routines.

For a little while, we were young once more filling our days with work and play that only a 9 year can bring.

Each and Every Day –Thursday, April 13, 2017

We went through a long spell of chilled nights last week, resulting in the thinning out of the pears and possibly the prunes and plums.  Which is alright, as fruit must be thinned to produce large sized fruit.

But the last two evenings and days seem to have moved into a much nicer contrast of warmer temperatures.

We are gradually getting the corn ground wet—Terry wet plants.  What that means is he waters everything up first….wet clear through—called subbed over.  Then the ground sets for a few days drying out. After it reaches a certain point in dryness he will go in with the planter and plant the corn.

While that field dries out we move the water to another field.  The water flows non-stop until harvest now.  This field, that field, always moving and changing.  (Just so you know the water is never wasted, it flows back into the canal to be taken out by the farm just below us…repeated for several more times until it reaches the Gunnison River.  Just has it has been repeated to get to our farm.)

Where the water merges with the Gunnison RIver.  The Gunnison river then flows on down to Grand Junction, Colorado, where it meets the great Colorado River then flows on to California.

The early mornings and the last of the day—evening—are still cool enough we wear jackets…the daytime warming up to summer time temps.

All the time, day after day…the work steadily progresses.

But throughout each moment there is amazing beauty…from early morning sun,

to the calmly arriving night; reinforcing Terry’s and my joy of living on the land.

The Soft Susurrus as the Night Gathers—-Tuesday, March 14, 2017

There is a silence, which descends on the land, as the day starts to fade and night begins creeping into all the corners of the earth

Although the day time sounds are muted.  But darkness, you understand,  is not silent…small melodious voices break out through all the long time, of that mysterious shadowy time of sleep.

Invisible intimate sounds: the hoot of an owl, a squeak of a scurrying mouse, a nightbird calling;the howl of a distant coyote…are a constant flicker at the edge of hearing.

There are those who feel an uneasiness in the night. But not I….

I find a late night walk (among those creatures of the land) a rather comforting journey of peace.

After the Storm March Arrived—-Thursday, March 2, 2017

day

Yesterday March arrived.  The sky cleared and filled with hollow clouds following quickly behind skudding black snow and rain clouds.

pink-sky

The morning sun (yesterday and today) shot the sky with colors worthy of a carnival…the air chilled but intoxicating.

get-set

We warmed up to great 45* (7.22222 celsius). The air still enough a candle’s flame would have burned high and steady.

sunrise

We counted 35 visible calves, plus two cows in the process of having their calf.  How many calves were hidden—we will not know until the Mom brings them out of hiding.

moon-001

Last night the sickle moon glimmered in the star studded sky.  The air holding the scent of past snow and ice, and the promise of green and growing things.

Spring (for me) has arrived!

The Whole Sky Flared—-Sunday, February 12, 2017

the-last-of-the-day-001

One evening I was walking with Shannon and Romeo, the dogs–Black Dog, Rocky and Boomer, plus Mindy and Sam following us, when the whole sky flared into vivid light

The Routine of My Life is Part of My Daily Contentment—-Sunday, January 29, 2017

A Gathering Chill—-Thursday, December 15, 2016

evening-pinkI had that one time shot of the perfect rising of the Full December Moon and the setting sun drenched mountains,  then it was back to clouds.

But last evening the the clouds thinned just a smidge

sprinkles-of-sunbeamsWith the air restless, edgy, and even agitated.

sunburstThe sun a very blurry pale burst which blessed somewhere ‘over there’ with it’s pleasant glow.

dust-beams

The clouds had thinned enough to show the disk of the sun, a pale blurry spot in the sky, but sinking lower.

Then the last rays of the sun burst upon the clouds in a luxuriously pleasant intense color of light

There is a feel of rain in the air today.  Although, the clouds are thick, they are high.  It’s not as cold as we’ve been having; I can smell moisture.  If it cools down we will have snow otherwise there is a strong possibility of rain.

When Time Is Still—-Sunday, August 28, 2016

Early-Morning-1There is a time, within each day, when time seems to stand still

SunriseThat point when everything waits— for just that moment, that pure moment of breathlessness

When the sun breaks forth into a new day

Then the minutes and hours of the day takes over —with lists of ‘things to do’ and ‘stuff to get done’ and the people ‘who need’

But, If we just stop and look we can have that moment of balance we all crave…

Then the night rises up to claim it’s fair share of time.
