About Dayphoto

My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Our sweet kitty who helps keep the farm safe. And Boo Berry Betty, a breeder dog learning to be a Farm Dog! The lovely thing about blogging it opens the world up for all of us to reach out and meet people from many different cultures and different ways of life. You can find me every day (but Saturday) at https://coloradofarmlife.wordpress.com/ Your Friend on a Western Colorado Farm, Linda Brown

In the Silence of the Air —- Sunday, May 5, 2019

Our air is full of the scent of the Lilacs

Rich and sweet and lush all at the same moment

All three of my bushes are in bloom fluttering gently in the soft spring breezes

How very blessed we are, for it’s been several years since we have had blooms

Thankfully not this year.

Another glorious gift from the sky arrived in my message box on FaceBook

A most beautiful double rainbow spanning Vadarae’s cotton fields in Texas.  A most delightful sight!  Glorious to behold!

Thank you, Vadarae!  A rainbow from you, now for all of us!

From my heart to your world,

Linda

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Haley

Haley is the farm renter’s dog.  She is nice!  I mean really nice.  But she hardly ever gets to get out and play with me.

Still, we have a great time talking to each other anyway.

Although, Haley told me she gets to get out and sniff out the news of the farm.

Which reminded me.

“Did you know we have lots of coyotes of the farm, Haley?”  I asked.

“NO!” Haley answered in a quivery voice.  “I’m scared of coyotes!”

“You should be” I replied. “We have some of the meanest, baddest, coyotes in the whole wide world living here on the farm.”

“I mean the meanest, baddest, biggest, ugliest coyotes. They snarl and growl and howl, but the worst part of the coyotes…if they want to eat you for dinner, they are so silent, silenter, silentest slinkest animals ever!”

I watched Haley try to hide behind her human in the side-by-side, her whole body trembling and shaking, causing the side-by-side to shake and roll.

“What’s up, Haley?” Her human turned around and petted Haley. “Boomer is just a little old beagle he can’t hurt you in any way or form.”  Her human kept patting Haley on the head.

“COYOTES!” Haley woofed.  “Boomer says there are COYOTES on the farm.”

Haley’s human turned back to Dad and they kept on talking about this and that and everything.

Gradually Haley got hold of herself, peaked over the edge of the side-by-side and asked, “You better tell me about these coyotes, Boomer. I have a feeling my human is going to learn the hard way…if I can head them off before he learns, then I’ve done a very good thing.”

“Okay,” I replied, “The meanest, baddest, biggest, ugliest coyote is THORINA!  Thorina is the mate to Thor they are legendary in these parts for killing more chickens, turkeys, cats and stray dogs than any other lean-limbed, long-haired, scruffy-tailed, yellow eyed, slobbering, hungry-looking coyote around.

In fact, Thorina’s daughter, Trinator, spend the whole winter peeing and pooping on the lawn at our house, looking for food.

Mindy and I made sure we stayed inside.”

“Oh! My Goodness!” Haley looked at me with huge Black Lab eyes…” On your LAWN?”

“Yes, but Mom and Dad took measures and finally ran her off.  Which was a very good thing.”

Haley gulped.

“Anyway, Thorina’s mate is Thor, there is a huge scar from one eye clear to the edge of his long hairy nose.  Whatever he came up against had to have given him a good fight to leave a scar like that!  One ear is all jagged and scraggly and his nose and mouth and lips look like he had been hooked by Boss Cow’s, (meanest, baddest cow on the place) horns.”

Haley sat down with a thump in the back of the side-by-side.  Dad and the farmer just kept on talking.

So, I kept on talking also. “Usually there are at least three or more coyotes hanging around together. They hunt in packs, so be careful.  A dog like you and I would have zero chance against anyone of them.

“Oh!” Shudder, shiver, “How can you tell they are about to pounce on you?”  Haley questioned me.

“They are just like dogs when they are going to attack something, they crouch down real low, fur bristling way up!  Their necks and bodies and even the tips of their tails look fifty times bigger than normal, and they have snarls on their faces; you can see two rows of long white fangs on each face.”

“Dogs attack dogs?” Haley wailed. “I never knew a dog could attack another dog?  Why would a dog attack another dog?  Dogs are for playing with not hurting.”  Haley tried to puzzle out the cruelty of dogs against other dogs.

“It happens, Haley.  It happens.” I said very matter-of-factly.

“Oh!  I want to throw up my breakfast!  This is terrible.”

“I understand, Haley…I’ve been there, right there where I thought the coyotes were going to get me.  Fear is a mighty thing….and I did throw up my food, although it was super, not breakfast.”  I jumped up and put both paws on the tire of the side-by-side.  If I could have put a paw on Haley’s shoulder I would have.

“Sometimes we hear their sad mournful howl wailing in the wind.” I looked Haley right in her big huge brown Black Labrador eyes.

“It is sorta pretty, in a scary, frightening, terrifying kind of way, but if you listen to the words they are really singing for their supper: ‘We need supper…we are hungry…our tummies are empty…food’ the words will repeat a long time.  If you hear them howling in the night, Haley.  Do Not go outside!  And do NOT let your human go outside.”

“Okay, Boomer, okay!”  Just then farmer started the side-by-side and drove off.  I had to quickly jump down quickly and let them drive off.

“Bye, Haley! Bye, remember what I said!”  I bayed to her as they drove off.

I hope she remembers.

Today the Sun Came Out —- Thursday, May 2, 2019

The dark curtain of rain and grey clouds left us over-night

Which is a very good thing.

For you see today, this day around early morning milking time, 75 years ago

My husband started life on his parent’s western Colorado Farm

And, as it was written in the stars, not only would he become a Hotline line foreman for DMEA, he would also continue farming through all the years, even unto today.

Happy 75th Birthday, Hubby-Bo.

From my heart to your world,

Linda

Thudding, Roaring, Crashing of the Rivers —-Wednesday, May 1, 2019

Although it is raining and raining and raining, in the mountains around us it is still snowing.

But between the rain and the upper mountain snow, there is still melt occurring.

The Robidoux River, just below our farm in the Roubidoux canyon is flooding….all the

the tremendous amount of water coming from the high country on the Uncompahgre Mesa

Just looking at the water like this: rushing, raging, tearing away the banks completely changing the course of the river

Tends to make me feel like I might fall in and drown….so I stay far, far away

The Rubidoux River is so full it is almost to touch the railroad bridge as it flows into the Gunnison River…

The Gunnison River is swollen from the gathering of all the streams and the merging of the Uncompahgre River (in Delta), plus the Rubidoux River…it is HUGE now…hurtling toward Grand Junction where it will join the Colorado River.

As the day started winding down, I saw a very faint rainbow in the hissing rain of the dark grey sky

It wasn’t very bright, nor did it last long.

Still, I saw it…and that was just the most perfect gift on the last day of April 2019.

Your friend on a western Colorado farm,

Linda

All Paths Each Human Walks Leads to God—-Tuesday, April 30, 2019

It’s terribly cold and rainy here with nasty wind and a sharp chill in the air

The Lilacs are blooming, finally.  Although, the wind is too sharp and strong to get any photos of their glory

The old-timers…folks older than myself (LAUGH OUT LOUD), since I am 70 now…

Say all the signs are pointing to a cold and wet summer.

Possibly that is true

Only time will tell.

Still, I marvel at the beauty all around me and give Thanks for the gifts that God has given to us.

From my heart to your world,

Linda

Moving On —- Monday, April 29, 2019

After reading all your comments; making my blog site more secure

Working with the kind and gracious lady who is the owner of her blog and a most wonderful generous author (I have read all her books and LOVE them)

She assured me all was well between us

The horrible comment was removed from her blog (or will be soon); all is well now.

So thank you each and every one of you!  From the bottom of my heart!

I Had a Terrible Thing Happen to Me —- Sunday, April 29, 2019

Someone forged a comment on a wonderful blog that I follow using my blog email and blog address as the author of the comment.

The lovely lady contacted me in a private email, slightly admonishing me in a very gentle way.

Here is the nasty ugly comment I supposedly wrote:  “I must admit not a lover of cats here at all as am super super allergic to them all but your kitty is very nice and glad you have a “mews” friend and is pretty kitty.Busy too buy the looks .You have a lovely home there .so happy for you you still like Gotland.”

A comment like that is so unlike me….so very unlike me.  It breaks my heart someone would be so cruel as to use my name in such a hurtful way.
From my very sorry heart to your world,
Linda

Those Gentle Springtime Buds —- Thursday, April 25, 2019

Cherry Blossoms

Whenever I walk outside in Springtime, I always feel as if I have entered into a scared time

Cottonwood Leaves

When we have finally crossed that bridge leaving winter behind

Linda’s Tarda Tulips

and step into a whole other world

Pear buds

One whereby we must always ask permission to wander in

Pear Buds

The tiny buds on each and every branch are carriers of hopes and dreams

Pear Blooms

Their beauty so sweetly scented the air is light and playful

Plums

Each little bud the keeper of secrets

Prune

And soon to manifest the solid reminder of the tree to reproduce itself in fruit.

A walk in the yard is a walk into whorls and swirls of lace and fragrance of a most fleeting and magical time.

From my heart to your world,

Linda

Some Days I Wish —- Wednesday, April 24, 2019

Somedays I wish I could commit to my mind

The sensation of each and every day that I am blessed with,

Even when things start off wrong and seem to go that way throughout the whole day

I still feel like magic is manifested constantly

in each and every second.

It’s an Old Magic

Full of wisdom we really should not mess with

Magic so profound and strange

And subtle…..

We can only wonder and say a prayer of gratefulness

And when we stop and allow the Old Magic to work on us,

We are engulfed in a sense of well-being.  Like a prayer…warm and pulsing, like the love of a mother, a best friend, protection of a strong dad—a knowledge of peace and awe.

From my world to your heart,

Linda
