I Wish for You Rainbows–Wednesday, August 6, 2014

6I, too, wish for you rainbows…

7

“This is my wish for you: Comfort on difficult days, smiles when sadness intrudes, rainbows to follow the clouds, laughter to kiss your lips, sunsets to warm your heart, hugs when spirits sag, beauty for your eyes to see, friendships to brighten your being, faith so that you can believe, confidence for when you doubt, courage to know yourself, patience to accept the truth, Love to complete your life.”  Ralph Waldo Emerson

The storms that played across Delta and Delta Country were loud and stunning in their brilliance.  What came after was just a amazing.  Everywhere we drove we saw rainbows.

When life gets your down, or strange fears crop up, or brilliant displays of anger or fear threaten to disrupt your life…I wish you a rainbow!

Guest Post and a Rainbow for Tuesday, August 5, 2014

Last night our skies were black as velvet!  The rain flowing down upon us creating a frosty feeling to the air.  I watched the lightening and thunder play and dance along the plateau as I fell asleep only to be waked two hours later with the same flashes of brilliance right over our farm.

The lightening was huge running large and small jagged lines from cloud to earth- the thunder cracked at exactly the same moment!  The effect was awe inspiring and very intimidating.  After I finish posting this I must run down to the kid’s house an check everything is okay.  I’m stalling—for if a tree branch has fallen it means work…and it’s way too wet to work right now.  (Although Terry is out wading through mud and mud puddles and slick ditch banks to change the water—the water never stops until harvest…ever.)

The crows are back…fall is in the air here–I can even see the leaves starting to change color here.

This morning I saw a very faint rainbow…very faint but it was still nice to see.

Some time ago I posted that cows were able to take care of coyotes and tried to explain how.

Sara from My Favorite Sheep blogspot….sent me an email about cows running off a bear: It’s pretty stunning I’ve posted it below.

Off now to go see if we have any lightening damage.

Oregon cows and a black bear…don’t mess with Mama!
A couple of evenings ago, an Eastern Oregon rancher went out to check his beef herd.
He saw a very strange sight — and was able to photograph an unusual battle between
a black bear and some brave cows. The bear began to attack a cow and then the herd
came to her aid.  One cow in particular got especially aggressive and head-butted the
bear right off its feet. Then, two cows sandwiched the bear between their heads. After
that, the bear decided to flee and limped back into the woods.

The blonde and white Simmental cow we know as I-12 went right for him.
She is a very good cow, a very attentive mother and about 12 years old.
She’s in her prime and knows that bears are bad news.
cid:4CDBEF7A15FE42B5B2B9AF9F05DEFD0E@ChuckComputer

Little does the bear know what is coming.
cid:C2D2644C33404BB082F11DA8A3B382C8@ChuckComputer
She tried her best to mash him into the ground. Man, that has to have hurt the bear!
cid:6CFBC65515644A9CBFD6ADAB66F12DB4@ChuckComputer
Nothing like a mad cow to give you a hard time.
cid:E48EF16FE18A4939817763FA3A3FC61F@ChuckComputer
There are a couple of photos where the bear is biting I-12’s leg and clawing her face,
but she is not giving up. Her stiff tail shows how agitated she is. Wayne said all the
cows were bawling, the bear was squealing and the calves were running around with
their tails in the air.
cid:D8EB3C88F630450E97C984AAA9096115@ChuckComputer
And here comes some help. This bear is about to know what real trouble is!
cid:4F3D8C43A03C44E0B596FCCBB6F979C3@ChuckComputer
When you have two females pissed at you, real trouble has arrived!
A younger cow, R-55, an Angus-Cross cow, age 7, is helping her out as best she can.
It is an incredible photo to see two cows at once trying to crush the bear.
Watch That hoof land home!
cid:4B56B85D2C954776AA11CADBF6CD262C@ChuckComputer
I looked up the calving records of both cows who are so aggressive in these photos
and they are both good, calm cows around us, and have given us no troubles
whatsoever. I’ll have to add in my notes that they have a very distinct dislike of bears.
Man, that’s a lot of weight bearing (pun intended), down on the bear like mashing a
lump of butter! It’s a wonder the bear could even move after all the mauling he received.
cid:DFEE387E5D9045D1B6A0F459E782C7A6@ChuckComputer
We’ll be watching I-12 over the next few days to see if she needs Treatment for infection.
I don’t know how willingly she’ll come to the corrals for treatment, but she might not have
a choice. And stay away you won’t be so lucky next time!
cid:B4EE266BB6B142618B22727FEB8F9FD9@ChuckComputer
Lucky to be able to move at all.
cid:53B74D316E324EC18C3D174EF646D311@ChuckComputer
Finally, the bear decided to vacate the area. We thought he’d be dead for sure,
but there was no sign of him the next day.
cid:DD1F992FC7EC4297A2E4FE2C88449B91@ChuckComputer
We’ll have to keep an eye out for eagles in the trees or flocks of ravens flying up. We’re
sure he’s got some broken ribs out of the deal at the very least. Wayne couldn’t believe
his eyes when he witnessed this ruckus.  It’s a once-in-a-lifetime photography event.
Amazing!

A Gift in the Sky —June 10, 2014

JpAfter a rambunctious day of wind and potential rain the other day. The wind started dying down and the clouds parted to let the sun shine through.  In so doing so it shot sunbeams through the remaining raindrops to allow a rainbow to shine through.

Rainbows are the hope of the world, the hope of everyone’s life, the hope of something nice coming down the road to make the day just a little bit better.

Sending each of you hope today!

Your Friend,

Linda

Saturday the Last Day of August 2013

Terry pulled half the pinto beans yesterday before the dew left and the pods became too dry.  Pintos have to be pulled early so the dew will keep the bean pods from cracking open and spilling the pinto beans out onto the ground.  Once the beans are spilled there is no way to pick them back up.

Pulled-and-wating

Today he has been out there since full light.  He hopes to get the other half of the field done before the heat hits.

In-rows

Depending on the weather he will wait about a week then start combining the rows, gathering the beans into the hopper and then the truck and then off to the Beanery to be sacked and sold.

Drop

Rain clouds keep building every afternoon, which causes us a huge amount of tension.  So far so good, the storms stay around us in the foothills and on the plateau, which is good.

Another thing that is good is we sometimes get a rainbow!

Tiny

Feeding the bees seems to be working. I use a dollop of honey early in the day…by nightfall it’s all cleaned up.

Work-a-nigh

Terry also said we are on the very last irrigation of the corn.  Boy, has summer ever flown.  Although, we will still irrigate the hay fields the work load of changing water is fast disappearing.

I’m not sure but I think most of the adult Hummingbirds have left, I still have lots of little ones feeding.  I’m not having to fill the feeders as much so I’m thinking this is a sign the large majority of those delightful little birds have gone.  I know the Bullock Orioles are gone since I haven’t seen any for two weeks now.

Water-color

I’m off now to fork the bean ends back so we don’t lose any…those tiny little beans are what we’ve been working all summer to have.  🙂

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — The Bean Field

We’ve been helping Mom cut corn in the pinto bean field.  She takes the cut corn stalks down to Misty’s to feed the goats…sometimes we go down on the four-wheeler with a load of corn, other times the corn is loaded in the back of the pick-up and hauled to the goats.

Out-for-a-ride

Once we get to the goats Hank Puff comes back with us.  Hank LOVES riding in the back of the truck!  So do Fuzzy and I.

We all just LOVE TO GO anywhere at any time!

The days have been really hot and muggy, but we still go out and help.

Puffy-clouds-1

Dad helps us also…we go out early in the morning for a few hours. Then we all go back out around 7 in the evening.  Fuzzy and I hang out and wait for them…Fuzzy stays in the shade by the four-wheeler and I wait by looking around and smelling what I can smell.

A couple of evenings the grand kids, their Dad and our Sister Misty came out and helped. Our other sister, Shannon did too.  Things went faster that way.   Hank came along to help me check out things.

Clouds-3

Last night Mom and Dad and Fuzzy and I were all out in the field—the clouds were nice and fluffy when we went out

Storm-2

Then a storm blew in

Storm-1

The folks talked about heading in, but there was always just one more row to finish

Storm-3

So we stayed

It was awesome!

Storms here and there all around us!

Then suddenly we saw it —-

Double-Rainbow

A beautiful rainbow

The-other-end

From one end of the field to the other end

Middle

Complete with the middle!

Stunning

Mom and Dad kept on working until almost dark then they went and changed the water

As we were coming in I realized

Clean-beans

THE PINTO BEAN FIELD WAS CLEAN!

No more corn!

Dad said, “It looks real nice, doesn’t it?”

Fuzzy and I barked yes and I whapped my tail on the ground.  Fuzzy tried to wags his but he only has a little stump.

WE DID IT!  Mom, told us “Thanks, boys!  Everyone did a good job.”

St. Patrick’s Day Sunday, March 17, 2013

We are experiencing a cold spring storm…feels like February out there again.  But it only feels that way….we all know it is really March so soon it will feel warm again.

Bow-of-Rain-March-2013

It rained off and on all day yesterday which effectively brought all farming to a stop.

Rain-Bow-March-2013

That’s okay, it will begin again.  Until that time the rains will wash off all the winter blahs and bring on the green growing things.

And it brought to anyone who looks up into the sky….RAINBOWS!

Rainbow-March-2013

Today is St. Patrick’s Day….Happy  Wear’n of Green to each and everyone of you.

Linda

It’s Raining Here

And with rain, there is sometimes a

RAINBOW!!!

Happy Tuesday Everyone!

Linda

Rain and Rainbows!

Although, we are doing pinto beans, we keep having little storms pop-up.  So far the rain hasn’t stayed or pushed the beans into the mud.

(Which would be horrible, you can’t get the beans out of the mud so the crop is lost.)

But we have been blessed and only received the the gift of the rain.

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — Fuzzy Plays a Trick on Boomer

It’s fall here!

Thank Heavens…June and July has been hugely unpleasant…searing heat, brutal winds, lots forest fires and No rain.

Lots of colorful plants starting to show up, and the rain!  Plus now we have mosquitoes. That isn’t good, but we will take it.

But that’s okay; Boomer and I are really enjoying ourselves!

Although, I have to admit, when Hank shows up, or any of Shannon’s dogs, Balou, Rock (two Rottweilers) and Huston (the most beautiful dog in the world) Boomer sorts of forgets what we were doing and goes off with his head cut off, so to speak.

Let’s see by his self, Boomer is intelligent, courteous, and resourceful, but when others show up, simple things, like going for a walk to the upper-end turns into a five-hour energy drink.

First Boomer and Hank, and Balou and Rock have to pee on everything.

And I do mean EVERYTHING… their Mom and my Mom have to make sure they move quickly through the yard, past all of Dad’s equipment, the sheds, the tires on every piece of vehicle and the grain bins.

I don’t know what is worse…tires or the grain bins for being pee magnates.

I’ve tried to keep up with them, but my leg doesn’t raise real high anymore so I have to settle for a shot in the dark.  Sometimes that’s not good…I miss.  Where I’ve been aiming I sometimes get myself. 😦

Mom told me I don’t need to keep up with everyone and just walk with her, then I don’t have to ‘raise the leg’ all the time, so speak.

Mom says all the dogs’ together act like a pack of boys—joking, poking, wrestling, and laughing.  Only with us dogs, it’s sniffing, running into the corn to follow a sent, jumping into the canal (only Hank, Balou, and Houston like to jump into the canal).  But they make a huge splash when they do it.

Boomer and I don’t jump in and neither does Rocky…Rocky’s hip hurts so jumping into way-over-your-head, very fast running water is not something he likes to do, then climbing out a grass covered slick, steep side of the canal isn’t fun either.

Boomer doesn’t like water.

I don’t even get in the irrigation ditches anymore, it’s for sure I won’t do the canal.  My 40 pounds wouldn’t last long in that thundering mess.

Then Boomer and Houston (she is a hound breed also) take off baying and following who knows what.   Sometimes they forget how far they travel and we have to wait while Mom and Shannon holler until they come back.

Walks like that are Bizarre!

The ones I like the best are the ones with just Boomer and I and Mom.  We find lots of stuff to look at; Boomer has learned to travel off but not go too far as he might miss out on something.

At the end of all our fields are waste ditches…these are the ditches that take the water, which is running through the fields, back into the canal.

I really like these ditches…they are just right to jump in and chase bubbles and cool your feet off.

So yesterday I was doing just that as Boomer was sniffing around to learn what he could learn. At the culvert I decided to play a trick on Boomer…I stuck my head into the culvert, came back out, looked at Mom and barked like something really neat was in there.

Mom threw a little clod of dirt into the water so I barked again…Boomer had to come running to see what was up…

Mom threw a clod at the other end of the culvert…

Boomer stuck his head to see if he could see something really cool.

So I barked real loud and scared Boomer.

He jumped as high as Mom’s knee….

We all had a great laugh…even Boomer…he rolls with everything!  Boomer is so much fun!

After we walked home, Mom, Boomer and I cut the sweet corn stalks from the garden to take them to Mom-mom’s goats!

Oh, yes…and Mom saw a RAINBOW!!

Make it TWO rainbows!!

Fuzzy
