The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—-I Say It’s Fall

Mom and thought it would be a good thing to show you…that IT IS FALL HERE!!!

Heading-to-the-dough-stage

The corn is starting to move from the milk into the dough.  Next step it will dent.  When it dents the Dad will stop irrigating the corn.

Deer-Damage

The deer love eating the corn right now.  They eat off the cob, just like a human does.

FallThe Rabbit Brush is blooming…it usually blooms in September.

Leaves-2The Leaves are starting to turn on the Cottonwood Trees

Leaves-in-our-treeA whole month early

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—-Just Say’n

When the little kids were here they brought all three of their cats AND Hank Puff with them….oh, yes, and four fish.  They were bringing all these critters because they were moving from Craig, Colorado to Battlement Mesa, Colorado.

The little kids and all the critters stayed with us and their Aunt Shannon, my oldest sister.

Well, wouldn’t you know it one of the cats bolted out the door at Shannon’s and became….lost!

After days and days of looking for O’Malley, setting a live trap in the garage at Shannon’s the looking for O’Malley had to stop.  Either the cat was lost or didn’t want to be found.

We are all sad.

Then a week ago today (Friday) something tried to break into the front porch of our house (around mid-night)…climbed right up the screen door and rattled it mightily.  Scared Mom right out of the bed.

Off and on throughout the night, this someone tried to climb into the front porch of the house, Sammy and I sat up a stern watch protecting the place.  Well, really, Sammy the cat and I slept through the whole thing.

The next morning Mom and Dad decided to set a live trap to capture whoever it is trying to break in; thinking it might be O’Malley, since she hung-out up here for several days before being taken down to Aunt Shannon’s.

Mom baited the trap with yummy canned cat food, set the trap and proceeded to wait.

I, Sherlock Boomer, took it upon myself to find O’Malley and bring her home to the kids.

Flee-2

The second night I patrolled the long lane from our house to the mailbox….nothing.

Flee-1Just one of the deer skittering through.

Rac

On the third night I headed out toward the Butler Bins…I had smelled some pretty interesting smells out there…raccoons.  I didn’t tell Mom it was raccoons…one never knows, raccoons are very clever at breaking into things.  Maybe it was one of them trying to get into the house.

Beagle-in-Olathe

The fourth day Mom changed out the canned cat food.  Then Mom, Dad, and I headed up to Olathe, Colorado to get some parts for Dad’s pressure washer.

I scanned the world looking for O’Malley.

Nothing.

I did see dogs along the way; we had some great barks at each other.

The fifth day—nothing

In-the-cageThe sixth day—I took care of the cat food.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—Farm News

I thought I would show you some of the things I’M interested in…you know the real NEWS of the farm.  The very stuff that makes the whole place tick…MY sorta thing.

Run-Raccoon-RUN

We have lots of raccoons…they are pretty brazen little creatures; coming right into the yard at night. RIGHT IN!!!  I peal out of the back door and run howling after them (sometimes).  Well, not lately…running anywhere is out the question.  Although, my knee is coming along.  I can trot on it a few paces, lots better than a week ago.

Instructions

There is always the going to and fro and back again.  I like those times…Mom picks me up and places me on the four-wheeler right behind her and we are OFF!

Morning, noon, mid-afternoon, and late evening (plus sometimes way in the night) then off we go.

I always get the same old boring talk when we get to wherever we are going: “No, rolling in anything nasty, Boomer. Remember if you do you have to sleep outside in your dog house”. Then she picks up both of my long, flappy ears and brings them to the side of my head, when she does that I always think I must look like a bird or something.  Then she looks me right in the eyes and says: “You come when I call or you hear the four-wheeler start.  If you don’t you will have to walk all the way back in by yourself.”  With that she gives me a kiss on my very cute and loveable beagle nose and carefully lowers me to the ground.  Mom is very careful to put my front legs down first then my back legs.  I appreciate Mom!

As soon as I’m down I OFF!

Raccoon-tracks-in-the-cemen

Hummm, sniff, snuff…yep…raccoon’s washing their dinner off.  For some reason they like soggy food.  Ick!

Sniff, sniff…

OH!  OH!

Buck-1

As we were going home, when it was almost dark we saw a buck!  I haven’t seen any deer, so far, but here is one of the bucks!  Dad says there is a doe and a fawn up on the Sagebrush Hill, but I haven’t seen or smelled them yet.  Although, to be honest I haven’t made it up that far…soon though, after the old knee gets better.

Buck-2

Anyway…this buck isn’t even afraid of me or Mom or Dad.  Mom says we are his people (and dog).  She says he has probably been born here and lived here all his life and knows we aren’t going to do anything to him.

Sunset-on-water

Mom always likes to see the sunset…last night the sunset was on the water in the irrigation ditch.  She told Dad and me it was beautiful.

Just as it was about time to leave one field to go to another field to set the water I FOUND IT!

Yes! I DID!

OH THE JOY!

OH THE WONDER!

Something-Nasty

Forgetting everything Mom admonished me with I zoomed over and gave myself a huge roll in something really stinky and nasty!  IT WAS DELIGHTFUL!

Brought a huge smile to my face!  HUGE!

Did I have to sleep outside?  Ummm, well, yes.  But, OH WELL!  It was hot inside anyway and the roll SO WORTH IT!!

Boomer

P.S.  Sadly I got a bath this morning.

Corn Report—Thursday, December 3, 2015

30The deer are eating the corn, yum-yum.  Not a good thing.  Good for the deer. but not the bottom line.

29Still I don’t think we are going to be hurt!  It would take more than the small sized herd we have living on our place.

Corn-1We did have a nice melt yesterday.

23

A few of the farmers have started started corn harvest.  Just a small amount of farmers. Terry is thinking possibly Friday we can start…of course it depends on the melt, the mud, and the moisture content of the knerals.  I’m sure when everything gets just right for us the rest of the the farmers will be ready also.  🙂

That is when the lines are long, long, long at the elevator.  Still, it will mean Corn Harvest (and paycheck)!

Today we are building fence.  Seems like there is always something that needs done. 🙂

I hope your day is going well for you. As always, Your friend on a western Colorado Farm,

Linda

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—Forgotten

Can you believe it!!!?  Mom forgot to let me blog last week!  I was SHOCKED!!!

1Oh, well!  I still had lots to do.

14

I checked out the perimeter of the farmhouse every morning and evening and more, if I’m bored.

2Sometimes I head out in the night.  Because…

3Well you see why.

12It’s really smoky here.  All the smoke from the horrible wildfires going on in California, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, Montana and Wyoming has drifted into our area.

Red-SUn-2 It’s caught here…we are full of hills and dales, mountains and buttes, valleys and hollers, mesas and canyons,  so it makes for a wonderful spot to stay a spell.  Mom says we either need a good stiff wind or a nice heavy rain.

Red-Sun3I think I agree with her.  I spend lots of time sneezing, right along with Mom and Dad, and the rest of the people who live in our area. (Mom says she bets its much worse where the fires really are.)

We are working down at the rent house again.  Mom says she is not fond of rental property.  As for me…heck! I love it!  Anytime I get to ‘go’ I’m up for whatever there is to go too!  🙂

QuailLOOK!  A Gambol’s Quail up high on the electric line!

Shadow

Gota go! Mom wants me to help her!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—About Mom

Mom is doing better!  She says she still has a dull nagging headache, but the arm/elbow pain is gone.

We took several naps yesterday.  I slept right on the floor next to her…she says I snore…look who’s talking.  Humph!

Then in a tiny break in the rain, Mom, Dad, and I all went for a short ride.  We went to the Rocky Point on our farm.

The-Place

Dad says…  ‘Let’s all go up to my place’, so we did.

RUN

We saw some deer.

NIce

And Mom saw some yellow Iris like flowers growing along the Canal Bank,

Supper

back home we all sat outside and watch the hummingbirds.

Mom said she needed a day like this.

I licked her hand.  I think we all needed a day like this.

The Adventures of Boomer—the Cats

Well, I guess it’s true.  Fuzzy isn’t coming back.

After following Mom around for days and days until I got into a daze (TEE HEE) I decided hanging with Mom 24-7 is BORING!!!!   If she is outside that’s okay, but if she is inside all that I can do is sleep.  Right at first that seemed like a really good thing….then it hit me.

THIS IS BORING!!!

I tried whining at Mom, trying to get her to come outside and ‘DO SOMETHING’, but she would just reach down and pet me all over and give me a really nice leg shaking/scratching belly rub.  Then she would continue dusting or whatever it was she was doing.

I tried helping her cook—THAT didn’t work for sure.

So I said to myself—“WHAT CAN I DO?!?!??!”  That’s when it hit me —I can make friends with the cats!  Maybe we could do ‘stuff’ together!!

Monkey-moo

The first thing I had to do was to get Monkey-Cat to want to go outside.  Monkey-cat never likes to go outside, but I whined and begged her until she finally said: “Okay, dog! Let’s go outside and see what so neat about being out there”!

1

Sammy-Sam grudgingly said Monkey-Cat and I could go out with him…BUT we could NOT get in his way.  He said he has extremely important work to do on a twice a day basis and we were NOT to create havoc with his routines!

“YIPPEE!!!” I howled…”LET’S GO OUTSIDE AND SEE WHAT WE CAN SEE!”

First we had to get outside…I can go…I just put my head against the back door and I’m out.  But the cats have to wait for Mom or Dad to open the door.

“To get outside, Monkey, you are going to have to sit at the door and meow and meow loudly”, I told Monkey.

Sammy turned a scornful eye at the both of us and said…”you just watch…I’ll get all of us out in a cat minute.”

Slowly he walked over to the door and sat down. He just sat there looking into the rest of the house waiting for Mom or Dad.

They never came.

It’s not working I fretted.

“Hang-on Dog I’m not done yet.”

“MEOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWWWWWWWWWW!!! Screech, yowl.”

“Wow! You sure are demanding, Sam,” Dad exclaimed as he walked into the kitchen then onto the back porch. Dad pushed open the backdoor and Sam yelled—NOW.  So we all bolted out the back door.

All

After a few minutes Mom and Dad came out!  “YAY!  We are all outside!” I bayed!

Dad headed over to the big truck where he is working on fixing the tail lights and Mom packed the trash to the trash cans.

Canal

“Come on, Monkey and Sam lets go see if there is any news at the canal.”

“SAY THIS IS FUN!”  Monkey screamed as she zoomed by Sam, Mom and I…”first one up the Willow tree is Queen of the world!”

“Look at that cat go!”  Mom laughed.  “I think she has finally figured out being outside is fun!”  Then Mom started loading up wood for the day.

Pathway

“Come on Sam let’s see who has passed this way.”

Neighbors-Tom

Sniff, sniff…..”oh, Aanda’s big yellow and white Tom Cat.”

Scram

“GRRR, GROWL   that neighbor cat is NOT welcome on this place….grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.” Sammy casted a malevolent eye toward the canal.

Outside-see

“What cat? Huh, what cat, Sam….how can you tell, are you sure…where did he go…huh, Sam?  Sam….”

“Shhhhhhh, Monkey…just put your nose to the ground and follow the scent”…Sam glared at Monkey.

“Sniff, sniff…..oh, yeah, you are right, Sam, snuff, snuff…yep, right here…down this side of the canal…”

Snuff-sniff

“COME ON…let’s see how far he went up the canal!” I invited as I slid down the side of the canal.

Down we all went- Sam, Monkey and myself.

“Oh!  This is really fun!’  Monkey exclaimed…”look there are pockets of water trapped between the rocks and little hidey holes under the long grass along the canal bank…”

“Look for mice”, Sam said.  “Don’t waste your time jumping on the rocks, Monkey…if you can find a mouse or two you can have a really nice snack.”

Smells

“You cats just go on and enjoy yourself, I think I’m going to hop up on the ditch bank road to smell what news is up here”…hummm,

One-of-the-herd

deer…yes…buck and a nice buck.

Travel

Oh…yes…the mom and the fawn are in the corn….RACCOONS!!!  A couple of big ones….snuff, sniffle…mice.  “HEY! SAM THERE ARE A TON OF MICE IN THE CORN FIELD!!!”

“SAM!”

“Thanks, Boomer, yum, yum, swallow, slurp…I found a few down here.”

“BOOMIE!!! WHERE ARE YOU?”

WHAT!  Mom’s calling.  Maybe I’d better —————head ——————–home…but………..wait……….hummmmmmmmm…skunk…I think they are getting ready to hunker down for the winter.

“BOOMIE!  YOU WANT TO GO TO TOWN WITH ME?  BOOMER!  DO YOU WANT TO GO!!!?”

GO?

GO” Town!?

Run to

“I’m COMING MOM!!! “

Run to

“I’m Coming!!!”

“Bye cats….I’m heading into town now.  See ya when I get back!”

Terry got the diesel combine fixed…Which is just wonderful!  He thought It was the thermostat…he drilled several holes in the old one, made a new gasket and IT WAS!  He got a load and headed into town around 2:30, making two loads in one day.  I don’t drive the combine or the truck.  I could and would drive the truck but that girl is terribly temperamental….Terry says she is a a girl….I don’t know I could apply the same to guys.

He got unloaded and was back at dark!  UNHEARD OF!!

Gold-Light If every thing holds together…the corn will be done in 7 more days! I’ve looked at the weather charts and it looks like the weather is going to stay nice for at least that long.  Of course it can always change.

Barn

Then Tally started draping herself all around the furniture while I was working giving me huge sighs.  I asked her if she was bored and she said she was bored and wanted to go to school.

We called her Mom and she said she could come to school (since she wasn’t contagious) which was good.  I asked everyone to come to supper last night, so they did.  She looked lots better!

Shine-on

My finger is slow.  Like most of you have said I will hit in on everything.  I do.  I wear a finger guard most of the time, but sometimes I take it off and then have to put it back on.  The swelling is down so that is good.

Everyone seems to have found the deer so I won’t post where she is.  There were two deer there.  The one in the hidden pictures was looking at me in the first one, then she was eating.

The other deer was just sitting up on the little hill watching something in the distance.

Deer-1Aren’t they pretty?

Well, today everything begins again.

I hope everyone is doing well I hope to get around and visit each of you sometime today!

Wednesday, November 6, 2013 Hidden Pictures

Thank you one and all for the magic thoughts, prayers and good wishes for each and every little problem we are experiencing.

Yesterday after the truck was loaded the chain on the gasoline combine’s hopper broke………AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!  Which means that today Terry and I will shovel out the hopper into the truck, then he will have to climb under and in to remove the chain….go up to Montrose to get a chain (more than likely it will be me and my little sick granddaughter to get the chain) while he tries to fix the diesel combine. When I get back he hopes to be combining with the first combine as the diesel combine is much cheaper to run.  If not…he has to figure out which combine will be the quickest to fix, not necessarily the cheapest.

What a harvest this has been!

The bean harvest was just as bad with the bean combine breaking down.  The funny thing about our equipment, is it is so old now that the parts a couple of years ago were cheap…not now…and it isn’t because they are hard to find, it’s because collectors have started collecting the equipment that we USE causing the price of the parts to triple in value.

Go figure.

So here we are…old ‘classic’ equipment, old ‘us’, and everything breaking down.  Terry says he either needs to buy some newer equipment or stop farming —the last isn’t going to happen my friends, I can’t even imagine it.  He says at 69 you could never farm out the cost of the newer equipment so he guesses he will just have to fix what he has.

Sigh.

Soooo anyway….here we are…Terry is at the elevator with the second load waiting to dump (he has been there since daylight) and I have a sick grandchild sleeping on the sofa.  In light of all that I thought something fun would be perfect for the post today.

CAN YOU FIND THE DEER

When we were up at the Diversion Dam I took a couple of photos of a deer in the trees, thinking we could play a game…sort like these two posts awhile back——-

Deer-3If you can see the deer tell us and also let us know what the deer is doing!

Hidden-deer

Have fun!

I’ll post the answers in a couple of days!

Your friend,

Linda
