About Dayphoto

My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Our sweet kitty who helps keep the farm safe. And Boo Berry Betty, a breeder dog learning to be a Farm Dog! The lovely thing about blogging it opens the world up for all of us to reach out and meet people from many different cultures and different ways of life. You can find me every day (but Saturday) at https://coloradofarmlife.wordpress.com/ Your Friend on a Western Colorado Farm, Linda Brown

Another Job Done Until Spring—Wednesday, September 30, 2015

DirtWell, we got half of the dirt cleaned off of the settling pond! (all the edges must be cleaned off so the pond can be re-dug in the spring.)

The rest will wait until March or early April, just before the water is turned into the ditches on that field.

Hay-CustomerBoomer had a great time…but nothing compares to loading up and ‘escorting’ in and out hay customers!  Well, maybe right up there with the Mail Lady—and SHE always has a dog cookie with Boomer’s name written on it!

Evening-walkA good couple of days work! Nothing broke down, everything went smooth as glass.

You can’t ask for more than that.  🙂

Waiting for the Moon, Tuesday, September 29, 2015

BM-8Like all of you, Terry and I waited for the Super/Blood moon to rise over the eastern mountains.  (Although,  Terry had to jump up randomly from the Broncos game), Boomer and I sat outside and ….watched!

BM-#The site was a fascinating wonder to behold

Blood-Moon-1What an amazingly beautiful gift from the heavens

Scenes of Fall, Monday, September 28, 2015

DustWe have finished with the pinto beans. Cleaned up the truck and the combines putting them to bed for…well, forever.

Today we start hauling dirt from the settling ponds..

Fall-2Sometimes we haul the dirt in the spring, but this year Terry wants to do it in the fall.

ScatterHe is very serious about renting out the place next year, so he wants to have the farm in ‘perfect’ order for the renter.

WorkWe use this dirt to build up areas that have either washed away or blown away.  This soil is also spread out over the farm ground to fill in holes that have developed.

FallOff now!  My wish for you is that your day is the best it can be!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—News of Our Work

Up

We are finishing up lots of things now…Lots of stuff.

I love this time of year!  There is Always something to do…sorta like spring.  Only opposite.  In the spring we are ‘putt’n stuff in the ground’ and in the fall we are taking stuff OFF the ground. 🙂

Blue-Skies-2

So far we’ve had really pretty nice weather…blue skies and slight breezes.  Keeps the heat and the bugs off a dog.  And er, my people also.

Boomer-helping-1

We are still irrigating…that’s the best part for me.

Corn-Tunnel I sniff out the news in the corn tunnels,

Skin

check for interesting things in the alfalfa field….I saw where a snake shed its skin.  Looked like a pretty big snake to me!

Racc

The raccoons keep coming in my yard at night.  I chase them off…there is NO room for a raccoon in our yard…they can have the whole farm, but NOT my yard!

Coming

I like to run as fast as I can in the fields…I don’t know a dog out there that doesn’t like to run and feel his ears flapping on his head…makes a dog feel free!

Scout-and-WillowMy sister, Shannon, has a new member to her family…Scout, the pinto horse.  He is really a neat horse…although, I AM a tad afraid of him…I’ve never been around a horse IN MY LIFE!   Now Willow, one of Shannon’s cats, LOVES Scout…they do all sorts of things together…I like to hover way over there (somewhere Not close) and just watch…Scout seems so BIG!

Net-Web

We have a cool spider in the yard…it makes a NET for a web.  I haven’t seen the spider yet, but I keep looking.

Fuzzy-Chasing-Water

The bean harvest is done.  We are still chasing water’, as Fuzzy used to say,

MOM

Fuzzy lives over the rainbow bridge now, Mom and I still miss him loads.

Shadow-Boomer

I have the bestest life in the whole wide world!  Running Free, riding on the four-wheeler with Mom, gathering news, gosh, just so many great things to do every day!

Getting Close–Thursday, September 25, 2015

Wake-UpWe are getting close (now),  to being done, with the pinto bean harvest.  Tomorrow should see the end!

3Prices are low. They are low on the corn and the hay also.  But storing something doesn’t always produce a higher price later on.

I always find this so odd…the farmer get a small amount, but the retail in the grocery store is extremely high…too many middle people along the way, I guess.

CR-and-T

We are still irrigating the alfalfa field.  It’s a big field and takes a long time to get across, but we should finish with the irrigation by Saturday.

Drying-Corn-1After that we wait.

Corn harvest will start the last of October, or in November sometime, it all depends on the moisture content of the corn.

Winding down to gear up again…it called harvest!

Another Photo from Merri—Wednesday, September 23, 2015

I’m late today…we just got back from delivering another load of pinto beans.  🙂

Merri's-LightsMerri sent me another photo (to share will all of you), of the stunning northern lights right out her door.

How incredibly beautiful her world is!

Pinto Bean Harvest for 2015—Tuesday, September 22, 2015

Harvest-2015Our pinto bean harvest has begun in earnest now. (Fingers crossed we don’t have rain…rain would NOT be a good thing right now!)

Grain-Truck-1We took the truck over and then Terry came with the combine. It was an all day thing, with more all day sort of things until at least Friday or Saturday of this week. (We are small farmers)
First-the-DeliveryWe sell our bean to the Beanery.

red-donkey-beans

If you see sack of Red Donkey pinto beans you will know [possibly] there are pinto beans from our farm in them.

OH! MY! Look at This!—Monday, September 21, 2015

MerriMerri, from Virginia, Mn, was sitting outside on her back porch a couple of evenings ago and thought I would enjoy seeing her stunningly beautiful sunset!

I did!  I asked her is I could share it with you and she said yes!

Aren’t we all lucky to see what she gets to see every day!

WOW!

The Walk Toward Winter—Sunday, September 20, 2015

Signs-of-Fall-1

Autumn leaves,

Leaves

Turning to gold, flying silently to the ground,

Gold

Leaving behind memories of hot wings of sunbeams

Golden-Light

The evening light echoing the beat of my heart.

Your friend, as always,

Linda
