About Dayphoto

My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Our sweet kitty who helps keep the farm safe. And Boo Berry Betty, a breeder dog learning to be a Farm Dog! The lovely thing about blogging it opens the world up for all of us to reach out and meet people from many different cultures and different ways of life. A Rainbow from Kate—Sunday, November 15, 2015

Kate Chiconi for Mackay, North Queensland sent to me a lovely rainbow taken over her home.

From-KateIn her email to me, with this lovely gift of a rainbow, she said:

“Genesis 9:13

“God said, “This is the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all successive generations; I set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud…

We have seen a great cloud over the earth in past days. Today we have a sign that we aren’t forgotten.

I leave you with the best words I know on the subject.

No man is an island,
Entire of itself,
Every man is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manor of thy friend’s
Or of thine own were:
Any man’s death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.

John Donne

Vive La France!”

Please slip on over to her blog to read the whole beautiful post she did on this very sad subject.

Much love,

Linda

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—A Little Bit of This and a Little Bit of That

It’s been a busy week!

ddWe’ve — meaning Mom, Dad and myself, have gone

Through-a-glass

here and there,

Townand then over there, and then back there.

Good-HorseRomeo, my oldest sister’s horse and my oldest sister came over to see us.  I barked at Romeo…in the BACK of Romeo, but he turned around REAL fast and snuffled all over me.

Everyone laughed because I laid as flat as I could get on the ground. I didn’t think it was funny at all.

Let’s just say Romeo and I have an understanding…I don’t bark at Romeo anymore. There is just something rather intimidating about a HUGE horse nose sniffing all over your rather small dog body.

Meow

Sammy and I scared up a ghost one night, we were outside by the gated pipe, just hanging around, when we heard the back door open and then close.  I was going to head in to see if Mom or Dad came out, but the door sounds came again, so I figured whomever it was, had already gone back inside.

HuntAbout that time, Sammy scared up a couple of mice, which he and I gave a good chase.

After, that the night air was starting to cool down—I gave Sam the good-bye paw and headed back toward the house.

Alert Just then a ghost came around the grain bins!  Sam and I let out a holler, meowwwwwwwwwwwwwwww,  WOOOOOOOF!

Me

GHOST!!!!

Silly us…it was just Mom.

Ahhh-Town

The next day Mom and I went to town again, when we got home…

Bone

I HAD a new yummy bone!

Sure has been a busy week!

Not so Long Ago—Thursday, November 12, 2015

Ride-1Just before our first snow fall, to be exact.

In the thin, cold, but sunny air….

Ride-2The two of us were flying down the road, top off to the sky, flying close to the ground. The two of us in the same wind.

A Storm Rolled in Last Night—-Wednesday, November 11, 2015

We woke up to snow this morning!  Although it IS melting, it’s still snow.  Sure seems early this year.

Off-we-goTerry and I worked on the fire roads.  We have one that is a pain in the ….well, you know what.

Fire-road-1Yep, Terry is stuck…that’s a chain, whereby I’m pulling him out. This particular spot is a real struggle.  Twice a year we clear and clean and create making it safe to get to the rest of the farm.

Fire is a mighty and very scary thing.

Helping-MomBoomer worked right along side of us, up and down, back and forth…over and over again.

Right now the wind is blowing, sharp and cold; pushing the clouds toward the north and the east, mud is appearing where the snow once was.  Work on the fire roads has ended for the year.

Guest Post from Kagedog in Cedaredge, Colorado—Tuesday, November 10, 2015

Kagedog sent me this beautiful photograph.  She graciously said I could share it with you.

Cedaredge

Here is what she wrote to me:  ” Doesn’t this kind of look like a Grant Wood painting?  :) I took it right before our first snowfall last week. You can see the snow that had already fallen on the Grand Mesa.

I just love it! Thank you, Kagedog!

Sometimes You Just Gotta—Sunday, November 8, 2015

Sometimes you wake up and go…”I’m tired of the same-o-same-o.  We need to do SOMETHING different!”

Friday was a day like that for Terry and I.

JI’ve been painting in our house for the last several weeks…bathroom, bedrooms, front and back porch; plus all the other things we have been getting done in preparation for the corn harvest. Loading up hay for hay customers, winterizing both yards and pumps and well, the list just goes on an on.

Terry looked at me and asked, “Well, what do you want to do?  Got any ideas?”

Yes I did!  I have been missing Bladen.  It was many weeks ago we saw him.  He didn’t come for Halloween, because of basketball games that weekend. (And, of course OTHER more interesting things 8th grade boys like to do.)

So we called Misty and asked if we could come up for Blade’s game with Baggs Wyoming.  It would be a fast trip as there were hay customers coming the first thing Saturday morning, but we wanted to see everyone for a couple of hours and watch Blade play.

She told us to come on up, but don’t tell the kids…just drive in an surprise them!

So we did!

Blade-2

Three hours up, a few hours there, then three hours back.  It was a nice break!  Even nicer to get to watch Blade play.

Blade-1Breaks…they are very good in the scheme of things…seeing family and grandkids…priceless!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—Like a Subaru

My sister and her husband (they live in Grand Junction, Colorado)

Me-and-Boom

By the way, I have three sisters and one brother!!!  They all have dogs.  But this is not a story about my nieces and nephews this is a story about Love.

The kind you see on a Subaru ad…

Anyway, Kimi and Cliff were up visiting…without their dogs.  I think I heard something said to mom and dad about just stopping by after spending time in Ouray, Colorado.

Personally I didn’t care what they had been doing—just that they were here.

The World Settled into Silence—Thursday, November 5, 2015

hhIt rained off and on all day yesterday,  and way into the night.

We actually woke up to rain. The air rich with the smell of ozone and the dried leaves, corn stalks and ears; now absorbed with water.

Snow-2

Then there came a feel of snow in the air.

Although, the sky was the same leaded gray the air itself had changed. A heaviness and feeling of something different; colder/sharper.

Silence, no small voices of birds or rustling of little creatures, as the crystals in the clouds changed from water to ice.

Snow-1

Then it came, sudden and hushed, flurries of little tiny noiseless flakes, whirling out of the air.

CThe sun is out now (as I type), the sounds of water returning, running off our metal roof, the snow is melting adding to the mud, flatting the fallen leaves.

The weather people were right.  An early winter storm has arrived.

Your friend on a western Colorado farm,

Linda

Brooding—Tuesday, November 3, 2015

ENow that we have moved from [my favorite] Daylight Savings Time into the time —- called get up and work in the dark and go home and work in the dark — Mountain Standard Time

The day does not so much dawn

FAs it just stops being night.  A small phenomenon, which will last for a spell.  Then we will start getting weak sunsets and weaker sunrises.

And all living things goes on hold, waiting for the lengthening of the daylight.

MThe weather apps say a big storm is to blow in here today…some places will see 45-50 m.p.h. winds.  Not good.  Of course that might not be here.  They are also saying we will see rain and snow at 5,000 ft.  We live a little above 5,000 ft.

PInk-Morning-RainThe clouds are gathering….I can see them coming in  over the mountain tops…a brooding feeling —- the Uncompahgre Plateau (not the mountain just above, that is Grand Mesa) has a dark and brooding look, the clouds are having a dark and menacing social party, talking about if they really are going to dump rain and possibly snow—maybe not, they darkly mutter to each other,  we just might like to fool the weather people.  Then a evil chuckle resonates between the cliffs and canyons as they band together chuckling.

NUntil the storm gets here, we wait, working at buttoning down all flapping and possibly flying things. We are gathering in the wood for the fire, making sure all can handle wind.  Or a huge dumping of rain.

Linda
