About Dayphoto

My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Our sweet kitty who helps keep the farm safe. And Boo Berry Betty, a breeder dog learning to be a Farm Dog! The lovely thing about blogging it opens the world up for all of us to reach out and meet people from many different cultures and different ways of life. The Wheel of the Year Turns—Monday, October 15, 2018

Summer has ended, so has early fall

The plants are all gone…not just nipped, but finished

No more glimmering colors of brightness, no spicy and floral scents on the breeze

The air is now sharp with cold and the sky scudding with wind-blown grey clouds

The seasons have turned—

Jack Frost our visitor

Still, I am thinking there will be a few more rainbows before the snow clouds arrive.  After they come I will watch for Sundogs; beautiful colors of ice in the sky!

On Friday a Cloud Sat Down —- Sunday, October 14, 2018

We woke to fog Friday morning.  Fog always and forever will remind me of my mother.

For you see, Fog is a rare occurrence here.  Happening rarely but with stunning results

A coolness descends on the land; sounds are magnified.

Momma would always say: ‘Look, kids! A cloud has sat down on the land”.

I often go out walking in the fog…just because, I’m walking in a cloud, which sat down for me to enjoy.

From my world to your heart,

Linda

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— And Then It Rained

All summer long (off and on) we wished for rain.  Of course, we didn’t want rain when the hay was down, or when Dad was doing the pinto beans, but there were times when the sun beat down without mercy and the temperatures stayed above 100*…even as high as 106* for DAYS!

It was at those times we prayed for rain.  Please send rain we would pray…all of us.  The Plants, the rocks, the animals, all.

But the rains didn’t come.

It’s fall now and guess what?

THE RAINS HAVE COME!

Big fat drops…not just a few big fat drops but MANY and Much and lots so much so it’s hard to gather any sort of news at any point on the farm!

Although, I do try!

There isn’t any news on the very wet lawn. I check every time I go outside.

There isn’t any news out by the haystack yard

Or the cornfield

Or the Butler Bins

Or down the long, long lane to the house

There really isn’t any news when it’s raining so hard I can’t see my paw in front of my face

BUT

JOY BE!!! HOWL!!!!!

Mom and Dad have company and now there is

NEWS!

Boomer Beaglie Brown

P.S.  Mom wrote the forest service about that big fire up behind us—this the answer she got back—- “the fire will burn in the interior until it receives a great deal of moisture. It is contained, just not entirely out. I hope that explains it?

So, Mom and I think we need LOTS MORE RAIN!  But up there on the Plateau, so that big awful fire will die and go away!

Then on Saturday—-Thursday, October 11, 2018

In a very dark morning sky, we loaded ourselves up and headed to New Castle, Colorado where our oldest granddaughter was playing in a volleyball tournament

As the sun lighten the sky (as we drove along)

We saw lovely bits of clouds laying sweetly along pockets in the mountains

Their beauty made my heart light

And the world a bit sweeter!

From my world to your heart

On Wednesday of Last Week — Wednesday, October 10, 2018

The storm clouds lifted for a spell last Wednesday moving on to parts not here.

Since it was so wet, Terry said, “Let’s go to Ouray and soak in the hot pool!”

Off we went…looking at the amazing clouds, the mountains, this is the Sawtooth Mountains and the beautiful colors of Autumn

The sky was incredible (this is Ridgeway, Colorado)

Not a lot of traffic on the road

The pool wasn’t crowded …. so the soaking was perfect for two hours,

Then on the way home, a motorcycle passed us from Indiana

At the stop light, we saw what was traveling with the gentleman…his DOG!

Best Friends for Life!!

Two thumbs up to that man!

Outside the Weather was Forceful and Damp—-Tuesday, October 9, 2018

Since the weather was damp and rather cool I decided I wanted to try my hand at creating and cooking a 9th Century Feast.

I just finished reading the whole series by Octavia Randolph set in the 9th Century Saxon-Viking era of Angle-Land (England) and Gotland, Switzerland.

Octavia Randolph is a very generous author allowing the first novel to be read free from her website AND she also allows you to download a book of Cookery Book(let)

Although, I had already purchased the Kindle version of her books before I visited her website.  But for those of you who wish to download the first book, the above link will take you there.

The Circle of Ceridwen is a marvelous adventure, I encourage you to enjoy the series also.

Anyway, after reading about Octavia Randolph’s Winter Feast, and her friend’s, Deborah Dishes take on the feast from the book of Cookery…

I decided I wanted to make a feast!

It took me two days to create—first off because of food allergy issues I had to make my (mock Venison pie) with a gluten-free crust. Then (instead of venison, being fresh out of venison, I cooked up a nice sized pork roast.

Then I got to thinking with all this prep work…lucky me two of our daughters called Sunday morning (the day I wanted to have a feast) and I invited them to come to share in a 9th Century feast.  Thankfully they came.

I sat the table with rather modern dishes (1970) and allowed the use of forks, spoons, and knives.  Being fresh out of ale or wine, they had to drink ICED water.  Other than those modern day conveniences we proceeded to have a feast.

Not wanting to create EVERYTHING I picked six items before we began I read to them a wee bit from the cookbook, so they understood the value of black pepper, nutmeg, and cinnamon.

Here is my take on a Gluten Free Venison Pie (mock)

Honeyed Carrots and parsnips with little flakes of mint

Lavender Pudding, which deflated a wee bit, but tasted wonderful

And oatcakes served for dessert with honey and cinnamon apples (of which I forgot to take a photo).

Everyone enjoyed everything!  They liked the little tidbits of knowledge I read to them, and the flavors of all the foods.

As for me…I want to do it again.  Using some of the other recipes in the book.  What a fun little feast we had.

From my world to your heart,

Linda

Only the Rain Falling is the Constant Sound —-Monday, October 8, 2018

It’s been raining for days and days…and nights and nights

But with the rain, there are bursts of color which pummels the dark sky with joy

The sun breaks through the heavy clouds

Freshening the sky and our eyes

From my world to your hearts,

Linda

The Bringer of Beauty and Pleasure —-Sunday, October 7, 2018

It’s raining here.  Has been for days!  And Nights.

But I am not complaining, although we are starting to be a tad too wet!

Still, this morning after a very rich and full cloudburst

A rainbow appeared over our house, landing in the now harvested pinto bean field

And on the Cottonwood tree at the end of Fedler’s yard

The whole tree was alive with the color gold!

The sky is a dark leaden color, the rainbow over our house brings such beauty and pleasure I just had to share it with you!

From my world to your heart,

Linda

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Rocky Chaco Man

Mom, Dad, and I were out working around the haystack yard when Mom looked up and said: “We are heading toward colder weather—sundog in the sky!”

I looked up with her and sure enough…there it was all sparkly and purdy!

Anyway…back to Rocky Chaco Man—

He has the best job…he gets to have lots of hugs and pets and pets and hugs…you see Rocky is a Reading Dog for the Mesa County Library System.

Rocky says he LOVES his job, but he HATES having to have a bath before he goes!!

HATES IT!

But Rocky Chaco Man’s mom insists—she says little kids can be allergic to dog fur so Rocky has to be as clean as possible.

Rocky says once he gets there he doesn’t even remember the horrors of the bath. It’s all about kids and hugs from that point on.

(I agree with Rocky…baths are NOT my favorite thing!)

The Bull Draw Fire—Thursday, October 4, 2018

That red and purple streak is smoke from the Bull Draw Fire behind us on the Uncompahgre Plateau

Here is what they are saying about the fire:

Good Morning Everyone! Starting today, Monday, October 1, 2018, we will no longer be updating the #BullDrawFire Facebook page unless something changes and new information becomes available.

Please contact Grand Valley Ranger District at 970-242-8211 with any questions you have about the Bull Draw Fire. You can also call (970) 874-6625 for recorded fire information for GMUG National Forest.

Thank you to everyone in the community for your patience and support these past two months. As you enjoy your National Forest, please be aware of the hazards in a recently burned area and please put your campfires OUT COLD.

The fire is 36,549 acres and 95% contained. Crews will remain engaged on the fire until a season-ending event occurs, meaning a large amount of precipitation, possibly snow.

Image may contain: tree, plant, sky, outdoor and nature

Photo Description: Fall colors on the GMUG National Forest, USFS

Well, the big storms are here!  And my sincere hope that the fire is now out!
Even as I write this we are having huge wind and slashing rain.
All our storms come from the area of the Uncompahgre Plateau so it is with a fervent prayer that fire is now history!
