We are still cold here. I know it is to be expected since it IS December after all.
The Gunnison River is starting ice up.
Our days are awaiting the return of the sun…if we have sun now it is thin sunlight, doing nothing to warm up the air. At some point in January we will have what old-timers called–THE JANUARY THAW–a false feeling of spring.
Nothing to get excited about, unless you are like me —once that happens I get HOPE!
Ever since the 17th of December the sun has been stuck in it’s day length of 9 hours and 27 minutes, with the last day of this reading to be on Christmas Day..then we start gradually increasing. GRADUALLY is the term until sometime in January.
BUT…..changes are taking place —the sun is starting to get UP just a tiny bit earlier staring on the 18th of December…just one minute at a time, so on the 19th the sun gets up at 7:26 then on the 21st the sun rises at 7:27, which goes starts to increase every two days and going to sleep just a tiny bit later.
Slowly, slowly, every so slowly the earth starts to make it’s mighty shift – thrusting itself back toward spring. By December 31, 2012 we will see a day length of 9 hours and 30 minutes, with the sun rising at 7:30 in the morning and setting at 5:00 in the evening, extending our day to 9 hours and 30 minutes!
January and February are bitter cold months, but the days are longer, which helps.
Which, for me, really helps!

Today is December 21, 2012, the end of the Mayan Calendar….it is also our Mom and Dad’s 45th Wedding anniversary!
Sunrise 7:27 a.m. and Sunset 4:54 p.m. Day length 9 hours and 27 minutes—same as yesterday.
Anyway…You want to know what is so funny?!
THIS!
Bahahahah, laugh, snort, chortle, giggle, and snigger…roll on the ground funny!
We about broke open our sides we were laughing so hard.
Houston, Rocky and Balou just stared at us…they told us not to knock until we tried it.
BAHAAH, it still was funny!
Then Houston, told us in her warm, sweet voice…that they always get to go to town now, with the hats and coats on they don’t get cold and stay warm. And they get to go walk the shelter dogs in town because they can stay warm.
“So there”, glared Rock and Balou.
That was okay by us…we both rolled in the grass laughing it was just so funny.
Then Shannon showed back up with the shelter dogs and….

Mom made us put them on and wear them BACK TO TOWN, where everyone saw us!
I, the Fuzzy Dude, cow dog extraordinaire in THIS!!!! Boy, as soon as we got to the park I rubbed mine off. But Mom put it back on the second we got back into the truck.
Sigh!
“Mine felt really good!” I, the Boom, kept them all on and even kept the coat on after we got back home!!!
Getting back in the house was the best. Those things came off and we could rest.

The dogs and I walked around the place yesterday, just for the fun of it.
Just to get out of the house and ‘do’ something.
Although, we were in a winter storm warning and I could see weather all around us, we were not being effected.
But I could see it coming in.
Then it hit….
Bitter cold wind, gusting to over 30 m.p.h. all most all of the night and still going strong. Not much snow, but the snow we have is flying all over the place.
Terry had been working on the ditch, but this took the farming urge right out of him 🙂
Took the need to get outside and ‘do’ something different right out of the dogs and I!
Of course the cats don’t ever really like to go outside anyway.
I think it will leave here sometime late this evening with temperatures falling way, way below zero.

Yesterday a very brisk, cold wind blew the clouds out of the way, leaving us with a very, VERY crisp day.
This morning we are in another winter weather storm watch.
BUT…look at this!!!
As the wind was blowing one storm away from us I saw an extremely rare site.
(At least for me in this part of the world)

But today…this morning…I CAN SEE SOME SUN…so I’m heading out for a walk.

Diamond came out to play with us yesterday. Diamond is an American Bulldog.
When she came to the shelter she had on a collar with tags, the shelter person called the tag’s number and the lady said she didn’t want her.
Isn’t that sad?

COLD!!! That is the word here!
Really cold!
But I can see snow on Grand Mesa and the San Juan’s I can’t see the Black Canyon or the Gunnison area because of fog. Just a slight amount on the top of the Plateau. It is supposed to warm up by 10* today and then we go into a slightly warmer period for a few days before another storm hits this weekend.
As long as it is snowing in the mountains I’ll live with the cold.
We have a flock of House/English Sparrows which have decided to make our farm home for the winter…Sparrows and Ring-necked Doves. As these two different flocks of feathered friends have grown all other birds have abandoned us. (We still have the Sand-hill Cranes and the Canada Geese, and the black birds, but they are in the fields, these are right with us in the farm house area.)
They are everywhere. The Ring-necked Doves have the house and yard, the House/English Sparrows have every remaining building and shop area.
The flocks are growing daily. I am not feeding them. They could go down to the feed lot 2 miles away, except the Starlings left (YIPPEE) as these two groups started taking over going down to the feed lot.
I would much rather have what we have than Starlings. I am NOT a Starling fan.
The bushes and the trees are filled with twittering little and big birds…and also the accompanying poop!
Sort of on the rather nasty mess side.
Well, back to my regularly scheduled work!

Alas, our above normal December temperatures have fallen to ‘normal’.
This is the high yesterday. Which really was much colder as we had a sharp wind with the cold, so the wind chill needed to be factored in.
Even as cold as this was Fuzzy wanted to stay outside, although Boomer didn’t.
Sam didn’t stay in much either, preferring the outdoors, then sitting by the wood stove when he came in, then back out he would go.

Although, I know cold is relative, this is cold to us
The temperature when I got up today.
And it will only get worse as the days wind down to the solstice on December 21st.
Will that be the end of the world?!?!?
I have know idea.
I do know that after the solstice, the days will start to grow longer again and the temperatures even colder and colder until we hit March.
Which seems like a very long time from now.
Oh, well. Cold like this is really hard on the bugs, which can be a good thing next summer!
