The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — The Bean Field

We’ve been helping Mom cut corn in the pinto bean field.  She takes the cut corn stalks down to Misty’s to feed the goats…sometimes we go down on the four-wheeler with a load of corn, other times the corn is loaded in the back of the pick-up and hauled to the goats.

Out-for-a-ride

Once we get to the goats Hank Puff comes back with us.  Hank LOVES riding in the back of the truck!  So do Fuzzy and I.

We all just LOVE TO GO anywhere at any time!

The days have been really hot and muggy, but we still go out and help.

Puffy-clouds-1

Dad helps us also…we go out early in the morning for a few hours. Then we all go back out around 7 in the evening.  Fuzzy and I hang out and wait for them…Fuzzy stays in the shade by the four-wheeler and I wait by looking around and smelling what I can smell.

A couple of evenings the grand kids, their Dad and our Sister Misty came out and helped. Our other sister, Shannon did too.  Things went faster that way.   Hank came along to help me check out things.

Clouds-3

Last night Mom and Dad and Fuzzy and I were all out in the field—the clouds were nice and fluffy when we went out

Storm-2

Then a storm blew in

Storm-1

The folks talked about heading in, but there was always just one more row to finish

Storm-3

So we stayed

It was awesome!

Storms here and there all around us!

Then suddenly we saw it —-

Double-Rainbow

A beautiful rainbow

The-other-end

From one end of the field to the other end

Middle

Complete with the middle!

Stunning

Mom and Dad kept on working until almost dark then they went and changed the water

As we were coming in I realized

Clean-beans

THE PINTO BEAN FIELD WAS CLEAN!

No more corn!

Dad said, “It looks real nice, doesn’t it?”

Fuzzy and I barked yes and I whapped my tail on the ground.  Fuzzy tried to wags his but he only has a little stump.

WE DID IT!  Mom, told us “Thanks, boys!  Everyone did a good job.”

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — The Middle of Summer

Summer is half-over!!! That’s what Mom told Fuzzy and I as we laid panting and panting under the car last night!

“Hang on, Boy! The heat will break-up soon as we get closer to the middle of July! Then, hopefully, we should have rain!”

“NO!” shouted Fuzzy and jumped up and moved under the pick-up.

“WHY NOT!” I yelled at him as he hobbled away!

“THUNDER IS COMING!!! We never have rain in the summer WITHOUT thunder!” shudder, shudder!

“Gosh, Fuzz, a little thunder never hurt anyone.” I said to him in a puzzled voice.
Last-for-the-year

Dad finished up the last cultivation of the year…the pinto beans are starting to shoot feelers. Once the feelers grow the rows shut then the pinto bean plants will start setting seeds.

Set-and-cultivating
Until then…we go with Mom to cut the volunteer corn out of the field. This corn is from seeds dropped last year as Dad harvested, they start growing and will make a mess at pinto bean harvest.

Help
Not from being too big to go through the combine but because the pinto beans and the corn kernels are close to the same size. You can’t have corn in the pinto bean at the beanery because you can’t clean them out. Same thing for Cockle burs!

Goats-3
So we head up with Mom as she cuts cockle burs and corn. Every night, just about sunset we ‘weed’ several rows…the cockle burs she throws away, but the CORN! The corn gets to go into a pile and go with us to feed the GOATS!!!

Goats-2

Fuzzy usually stays on the four-wheeler waiting for Mom. Or he lays in the shade by the four-wheeler.

Now ME!!!

I jump off the second the key turns off and head out for news. I have to really keep an eye on Mom while I do this because she will LEAVE ME!

Oh, yes, I know she will call and call and if I don’t get there in time she goes.

Goats-1
I’ve missed getting to go to Misty’s a couple of times (that is where the goats live).  Since I’m not sure where Mom really went I have to run home and wait for her.

I REALLY DO NOT LIKE WAITING FOR HER!!!

I really do like ‘going’ so I pretty much try (I really do try-honest I do) to keep an eye out or an ear up so I’m not LEFT BEHIND!

Tips-of-corn
Oh, I just about forgot — the corn is starting to shoot tassels!

Corn-and-sun
I guess Mom is right…we ARE in the middle of summer!
Boomer

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — In the Good Old Summer Time

I LOVE SUMMER!

I don’t even care if it is HOT!

Summer and I go together no matter what… there are things to do outside always!

Heck, I don’t even sleep in my dog house in SUMMER!

I sleep out next to the dog house in the cool, cool dirt!

We do lots of stuff in the summer…every day is FULL!

Summer-fun-2

There is helping Dad irrigate … we ride up on the four-wheeler with Mom and then while they set tubes we help stir up the mud in the ditch so it washes away!

Summer-fun-4

Our dog cousins like to hang out in the canal…Boomer and I NEVER go in the canal it would wash us away, away, away.

Summer-fun-3

The little kids play in water also…Boomer, Hank and I have never been invited into that water, but I’ll bet I WOULD LIKE IT!

Waiting

We always help Mom when she works outside…I like to rest my eyes while she is working. Lots of times Boomer keeps watch to see when Mom moves from one garden to the next garden.

(I have scared Mom a time or two because she says I sleep ‘like the dead’.  I’m not sleeping!  Hurampf, puff, puff     I’m just resting.  I always wake-up when Mom touches me and asks if I’m okay.   OR GO!! I AM ALWAYS READY TO GO!)

Mom says I have to change sides with Boomer on the four-wheeler because I’ve fallen off twice.  On the side I now ride on I can lean on Mom’s back to hold my balance.  You see I always Stand UP and sometimes my legs get tired.  The way I liked to ride on the other side I just would NOT lean on Mom when I got tired.  Now I do.

It has taken Boomer and me a lot of getting use to these other sides, but Mom says We Have to switch so we are learning.

When-it-is-cool-outside

Then when Mom goes inside we go in also.  Cool air is really nice when the days are too hot.  We are having humidity with our heat now—panting isn’t always cooling ENOUGH!

Summer-fun-1

That is how it is in the Good Old Summer Time!

Fuzzy

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — The Heat Shimmers

We made it to OFFICIAL summer!

And it is HOT!

Not just any hot, but HOT, HOT, HOT!

It was 107* in Grand Junction yesterday and 102* here.

The heat shimmers off the land – even the crops look wilted and tired.  On top of all that we have HOT—I MEAN HOT wind.

Although, when the wind stops no one can breathe….yesterday the wind stopped, that is how I know.  Why even the chickens are panting. (Have you ever saw a chicken pant?  The pant just like a dog…while their mouth is open their necks move instead of their tongues).

Fuzzy and I pant and pant and pant.  Mom and Dad irrigate and Fuzzy plays in the water.  Mom even picked me up and put me —! ME! — In the water.

I hate water.

But…gosh…it was well…NICE!

Fuzzy-and-Mom

Then we rode on the four-wheeler and dried off.

After that we had to go to town so Fuzzy and I begged and begged and begged so WE got to go with Mom and Dad.

The heat is rather wearing but getting to go for rides

Boom

PRICELESS!!!!

Not only is it HOT, it’s also DRY!!!

Thanks for stopping by …. This coming week is the 4th of July…(Fuzzy hates the fireworks) but we just might not have some here as there is a fire ban going on….Mom said we will have to call City Hall and find out.

Boom-1

Everyone have a nice and safe and fun holiday!

Boomer

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — The Lazy Days of Summer

Summer (well technically we aren’t there yet, but its hot enough a Dog can call it summer) is the bestest of times.

Sure beats winter…freezing cold, so cold your nose freezes shut, wind that takes your nose right off your face and then laughs at you because you can’t breathe anymore and no rides in the back of the pick-up because it is just WAY TOO COLD!

Boom-in-town

Just like in winter we go everywhere with Mom and sometimes Dad.  But in summer they go lots more places we get to go with them too—

Fuzzy-in-town

Like town—Fuzzy and I wait with Mom while Dad goes into the parts store or the hardware store…Mom always waits with us because there are people around that will kidnap dogs.

Hot-dogs-in-town

We always go irrigating and sometimes just for walks with Mom.  There we see things like rabbits…

BunnyI NEVER CHASE RABBITS.  Mom says I’m a funny beagle because that is what my breed was bred for…to CHASE RABBITS.

More-Bunny

But I don’t.

They are my friends.

I’m more interested in just smelling the smells and seeing what news is out there.  Maybe I was a news reporter in my former life.  Tee hee, hahaha…snort, churckle!

Robin-in-the-morning

Fuzzy likes to bark at the birds…he never bothers the Robins, but he sure does like to bark at the Barn Swallows!  🙂

Rolling-Bales

We help with hay, the irrigation, (morning, noon and night) and we work with Mom in her yard.

Smiling-Dogs

Lately the heat has been ‘over-the-top’ not just the heat but lots and lots of high winds.  But Fuzzy and I have it figured out how to stay cool.

Hot-Dogs

Nothing beats underneath Dad’s pick-up!

Very-Hot-Dogs

Nothing!

We lay under there and we stay cool and unruffled!

On top of all of those really cool things to do we get to chase

Squirrel

SQUIRRELS!!!

Fast-Squirrel

Gotta go!  HURRY FUZZY HE IS HERE!

Boomer

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — The Time of the Skunks

Let me tell you about our night visitor—-A SKUNK!

Night-skunk

Spring, summer, and fall are all TIME OF THE SKUNK!  They do not hibernate in the winter but they do become less active.

Checking

We have another skunk!

Mom said unless it tries to get into the chicken house just LET IT PASS ON BY!

Hummmm

No chasing it!

Come-see

EVER!

Did you know skunks only live in the New World and they are part of the weasel family!

They also have a NASTY spray this STINKS!  And if you get sprayed it is comes out has an oily, yellowish/greenish liquid!

Just ask HANK! The grand kid’s dog and our goodest friend!

B-Hank

OH! YES!  They can spray up to fifteen feet. (and the spay smell can travel a good mile.)

Hank took one on and tried to kill it…phew we can smell Hank clear up here!

I've-got-a-plan

Oh, yes!!! Mom says that we all need to be careful because skunks are the number one carrier of the Rabies Virus!

So all you dogs out there BE CAREFUL!!!

Because Hank REALLY, REALLY, I meant REALLY STINKS!!!

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — Thirteen Years and Counting

This is my BIRTHDAY month!

Birthday

Mom says I have a whole month for a birthday!  That is because she doesn’t really know when I was born!  I was a lost dog when Mom and Misty found me.

I was also five years old when Mom and Misty found me.

You see I was ‘dumped off’ in the country by my other people.  Since I am part Border collie and part Sheltie (that is what my vet says) I sat by the side of the road where they dumped me for days and days and days.  Anytime Mom or Misty would try to get me I would run off…I was waiting for my people to come back, you see.

I waited until I went from 40 pounds to 25 pounds.  I was sooooooooooo hungry I almost couldn’t run anymore.  But I waited!

Then Misty came out with ROAST BEEF!  That was it…I was Mom’s for life.  Mom took me home and gave me lots of love and took me to the vet and well…here we are eight years later!

Beautiful-Fuzzy

Since Mom brought me home in June that is when my birthday is…I get a whole month…because neither she nor I could figure out a good day.

Fuzzy

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to ME!!!

Dad had a meeting so Mom, Boomer and I did the water without Dad.  We had lots to do.

Dead-Skunk

A skunk got in one of the gated pipes so we had to get it out and then bury it.

WAY COOL!

Boomer and I wanted to sniff it up really well, but Mom didn’t let us….  “Leave the dead alone you guys!” she said.

Beans-are-up

We had to walk up to the middle of the pinto bean field and check on a pipe there…it was horribly HOT!

What's-out-there

Then we rode the four-wheeler up to the hay field to see how the alfalfa was in the hay making process.  Boomer jumped off because he smelled a cool smell and had to run home.

With-the-dogs

Then we sat outside and had a couple of really yummy Dog Treats and a milk bone for my Birthday while Mom watched the hummingbirds. And I got lots and lots and lots of pets.  Boomer got some too, but it was my special day so Boomer had to let me have the most!

Night-food

Then around 10 o’clock that night we all went back out and changed the water in the front corn field.

It sure was a nice day!

A perfect Birthday just for me!

Fuzzy

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — Fun and Entertainment

This is Boomer…I’m going to show you what Fuzzy and I do for fun and entertainment.  It isn’t all work here on the farm.  We do more than irrigate, sleeping as much as possible, and barking the mailman/FedEx/UPS guy down the road, and in Fuzzy case, barking at the birds!

Fuzzy LOVES this time of year because there are SO MANY BIRDS!!!!!

Sometimes…just sometimes, mind you we get to go on TRIPS!!!!

Just the other day was one of those SOMETIMES!!!

Dad loaded up me, Fuzzy, the three little kids that are our Mom and Dad’s grandchildren, and the little kid’s Dad into the pickup….Mom rode in the back with us dogs and kids.  Then our sister, Shannon loaded up Rocky, Balou, Hank, and Houston in the back of her pickup, the kid’s Mom, our other sister, and we headed UP TO THE PLATEAU!!!

25

(I don’t know that truck behind our cousins…it was just somebody who wanted to get around us.  Which he did right after the photo was taken.)

This is Mom’s favoritits place in the whole wide world—the Uncompahgre (Un-com-pa-gray with the accent on the pah) Plateau!

*Uncompahgre translates from the Ute Indian word; ‘rocks made red by water,” “Rocks that make red water,” or just plain “dirty water.”

*Though the place where this natural stream pollution occurs was originally one small mineral spring, the name was given to a whole tribe of Utes (against their will), a mountain, a river, and one town –which later repudiated it because hardly anybody could spell it, opting instead for Delta.

We were going to Lee’s Reservoir!

YIPPEE!

Catching-sticks

There was ever so much fun…stick chasing in the water (although, I DID NOT GO INTO THE WATER AS I DO NOT LIKE WATER that much).  But tons and tons and tons of cool smells!!! That is Houston you see by Fuzzy in the water NOT ME…I was with Mom!

Wet-Fuz

Fuzzy enjoyed his time in the water very much…he never got out until it was time to go home.

Mom had to ride with a wet dog lying on her lap sleeping in the sun!  (She said she didn’t mind)

Then we got home and had to be checked all over for ticks…this is tick season.

Ticks are some nasty bug…ticks never move from wherever they land after their last meal…they just sit and wait until they get hungry ; they wait and wait until some warm blooded thing comes along and then they either hop on or drop down on the warm-blooded thing and start feasting.

Mom says ticks carry horrible diseases and are really creepy creatures.

Anyway, we got checked out, and then had a cool picnic lunch that our people shared with us. After we all got tired we went home and took long naps until it was time to IRRIGATE!!!

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — Night Work

Night work starts…well, at night!

Night-work-4

Sometimes not at night, but close to night,

Night-Work-2you know—

Night-Work-1dusk, or maybe it’s twilight, or the gloaming  or whatever you like to call it…evening!

Evening-1

Boomer says it’s really EVENING work…

Whatever it is it doesn’t matter…it starts when the day is ending.

Mom, Dad, Boomer and I go out and change the water.  We do this every day…Spring, Summer and Fall.  We ride or walk on the same fields, move the water through the same rows days after day after day.

I LOVE IT!!!!

Boom-on-a-ride

Sometimes we go to town…we have to ‘get stuff’ you know.  Gasoline, milk,

Townsometimes a hamburger treat for Boom and I —HEAVEN!

We are changing water more and more now…the water keeps getting cut back and it isn’t even June yet.

(Dad is real worried, but he can only do what he can do. — Boom and I wag our tails and give him lots of licks on his hand to try and help him relax)

We go with Mom and Dad all the time—– Early morning, Noon, Three in the afternoon, 6 at night and then at dark, so far we don’t have to go out in the middle of the night! But Dad says that is coming…like TONIGHT!!!!

Daily-walk-1

The dog cousins come at the crack of dawn for their daily walk.  We change water then. Well, really Dad changes water then and we just help.

Daily-walk-2

Then their Mom has to go to work.  She really never changes water…I don’t think she even knows HOW to change water.  But she doesn’t have too she does other nice stuff….like she loves ANIMALS and Tom the Turkey!!

That’s okay Hank’s mom knows how and she helps if Mom and Dad have to go somewhere and can’t be home at the ‘right time’!  We go with Hank’s Mom; of course Hank goes with us.  He loves to chase mice out of the siphon tubes.

Hank goes with Boomer and looks over the Chico hills, the sage brush areas, and even down in the slue smelling the news…in Hank’s case just seeing the news.  Boomer does all the smelling.

We’ve sure been having lots of wind…Dad says the wind dries things out…I’ll take this wind instead of the stuff we get in the winter—the so cold your face is wiped off your head wind…nope, give me a summer wind…keeps the bugs off a feller and ruffles the fur so ya don’t sweat so much.

With-Mom

Oh, have to go….Mom is calling for me to come—I don’t want to miss my ride.  I’ll have to stay home if that happens ‘cause I can’t run anymore.

See Ya!

Fuzzy

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — A Little Bit

This is about a little bit

Pink-Clouds

A Little bit of THIS

A Little bit of THAT

Wing

Tee Hee!

We have a new bird on the farm.  There isn’t much to say about him except he is really loud…talks all the time and does this drumming thing.  He is Dad’s turkey…he hangs out wherever Dad is…in the shop, in the other shop…out by the grain bins.  Fuzzy and I don’t care ‘cause WE HANG WITH MOM!

Shannon just came over and took Tom back…she has to take her turkey back as she really misses him.  Well, that works … Tom told us he really misses home!

Hi-Houston

The dog cousins come over for a walk every day.  We LOVE IT!

Although, I HAVE been sprayed by a skunk and so has Fuzzy  we say far away and just bark at where the skunk is so Mom and Dad have to come out and see what is up.

Cat-and-Plants

We all helped Mom work in the yard…Sam the cat hogged the Catmint, but guess what?  Fuzzy and I DID NOT CARE!

HEE HEE

The cat can have all the catmint he wants! 🙂
