The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—-I Always Help

COMINGI always help!  Every day with everything Mom and Dad do.

I mostly help Mom.  But we always help Dad!

Getting-Ready

Well almost always…there are some things Mom and I don’t do.

Earth-Ditch

We help change the water.  Dad always rolls up the dams, because they are tricky.

Mom doesn’t like the dirt ditch, but Dad says he does.  Mom likes the cement ditch the best.

Neither Mom nor Dad like the gated pipe; syphon ditches are their favorites.

Head-Gate

Right now we are helping Dad fix the erosion at our head gate.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—-Just Say’n

When the little kids were here they brought all three of their cats AND Hank Puff with them….oh, yes, and four fish.  They were bringing all these critters because they were moving from Craig, Colorado to Battlement Mesa, Colorado.

The little kids and all the critters stayed with us and their Aunt Shannon, my oldest sister.

Well, wouldn’t you know it one of the cats bolted out the door at Shannon’s and became….lost!

After days and days of looking for O’Malley, setting a live trap in the garage at Shannon’s the looking for O’Malley had to stop.  Either the cat was lost or didn’t want to be found.

We are all sad.

Then a week ago today (Friday) something tried to break into the front porch of our house (around mid-night)…climbed right up the screen door and rattled it mightily.  Scared Mom right out of the bed.

Off and on throughout the night, this someone tried to climb into the front porch of the house, Sammy and I sat up a stern watch protecting the place.  Well, really, Sammy the cat and I slept through the whole thing.

The next morning Mom and Dad decided to set a live trap to capture whoever it is trying to break in; thinking it might be O’Malley, since she hung-out up here for several days before being taken down to Aunt Shannon’s.

Mom baited the trap with yummy canned cat food, set the trap and proceeded to wait.

I, Sherlock Boomer, took it upon myself to find O’Malley and bring her home to the kids.

Flee-2

The second night I patrolled the long lane from our house to the mailbox….nothing.

Flee-1Just one of the deer skittering through.

Rac

On the third night I headed out toward the Butler Bins…I had smelled some pretty interesting smells out there…raccoons.  I didn’t tell Mom it was raccoons…one never knows, raccoons are very clever at breaking into things.  Maybe it was one of them trying to get into the house.

Beagle-in-Olathe

The fourth day Mom changed out the canned cat food.  Then Mom, Dad, and I headed up to Olathe, Colorado to get some parts for Dad’s pressure washer.

I scanned the world looking for O’Malley.

Nothing.

I did see dogs along the way; we had some great barks at each other.

The fifth day—nothing

In-the-cageThe sixth day—I took care of the cat food.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—-Stuff

Shooting-Feelers1

My days are pretty much just rolling along.  We are starting to see little vines and flower buds on the pinto beans.  I could care less, but Mom and Dad think it’s a HUGE deal.  I just wag my tail and agree with them.

Baby-CornThe baby corn is popping up on the corn stalks.  If I move through the corn rows I come out will corn pollen on me.  Dad says this is a scary time for corn, the deer like to eat the silk.  If they eat the silk the corn won’t make.  Dad always gets really worried about this time of year.  Mom says it’s our 10% tithe.

Apricot-Theif

The fox and the raccoon are helping Mom clean up all the apricots.  Fox can climb trees, did you know that?  So can raccoons.  We have two trees they climb up, to the very top, and get those little apricot fruit Mom can’t reach.

Fox

Mom says we share here…works for her and works for them.  Also works for me, because I get to sniff all the news when they are on the farm and in the farm yard!

Sam-my-sam

Mom, Dad, Sammy-Sam, and I sit outside and watch all the hummingbirds every evening.

Little-Supper

We have four pair of Rufus Hummingbirds this year…Mom is really excited.  She says she counted about 30 little hummers.  I don’t get Mom’s excitement, it’s just part of the birds who live on our place.
Footprints-2

Now what I find exciting is FOOTPRINTS in the mud!  THAT is exciting!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—A HUGE WONDERFUL TREAT

WalkI’ve had an ear infection again.  After a trip to the Animal Doctor I got two…BOTH earfuls of ‘stuff’ in my ears.  Then my ears were massaged and massaged…I didn’t yelp once!  That stuff felt sooooooooooo good.

Going-to-townAfter a week I had to go back to the Animal Doctor where a cold thing was poked into my ears and I was pronounced “GOOD to GO!”

GO!!!  My favorite word…right up there with FOOD, Treat!  DINNER!

To-townThat evening Mom and Dad came out of the house and Mom said: “Let’s GO for a ride, Boomie.”

I beat them to the pick-up!  It’s been a long time since I’ve gotten to ride in the BACK of the pick-up!  Mom didn’t want my very long soft ears flapping in the wind—she said the wind might make my ears ache again.

Going-for-a-rideBut this time—OH! THE JOY! I got to ride in the back of the pick-up.

Evening-rideDad threw down my carpet –up next to the cab of the truck—Mom picked me up and helped me into the bed and we were off!

An-OutingI LOVE going for rides!  There are so many different things to see and smell, it just makes the day so much better.

I like any kind of ride, but the back of the pick-up ride is WONDERFUL!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—It’s Good to be BETTER!

I’m doing much better.  I found several things to roll in over a couple of days!

It was a huge delight—-until Mom got me home.

Then I got a good scrub down.

But that was okay, because I got to sleep inside.  Mom said I was clean and smelled good so I was welcome in the house. (“And please remember that!” She admonished.)

I do remember.  I just take the good YUMMY NASTY SMELLY STUFF along with the bad A BATH and go along my merry way!

Waiting-to-go-home

I pretty much rest my knee…usually I just sit on the back of our four-wheeler, Mom’s and mine and watch Mom and Dad work.  But randomly I’ve gotten off and explored.  Hence the finding of cool smelly green goo.

Then last night I decided to NOT hear Mom call or the four-wheeler start up.  I’m supposed to come the second one of those things happen. Usually I do.

Really!

But last night I decided NOT to.

That is when Mom and Dad went to a whole other place of the farm WITHOUT me!

Then, just as they were starting to head back to the house I remembered if I didn’t go with them I would have to run/walk the WHOLE WAY BACK!

Hurry-Boom

Taking off down the middle field farm road I picked up my legs and RAN!

Running

And you know what?  MY KNEE WORKED!

YAY!

It is so nice to feel GOOD again!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—It’s Summer Time

And the living is getting easy!

BYE

First things first, Mom says: “Our boy left today.”  But for a small space in time I got to be petted and loved on by the two girls.  The littlest one had broken the ball in her elbow and wasn’t feeling very well (they had been to camp and she fell off the top bunk during the night).

I understand about bad limbs…I blew my knee out again.  It’s been taking lots of time to heal this time.  Mom says it’s because I’m elderly, now, so healing takes longer.

Nap time

I’ve been sleeping lots and lots so my knee WILL heal. (Mom says I’m silly sleeping like I do in the dog house.  She makes me come in so I will lay flat.)

Getting-Dark

Mom rubs DMSO on it once a day.  I really like how it makes my knee feel.  Afterwards…like in about an hour, I usually feel good enough to go outside and do ‘doggie things’—you know sniff around and gather up all the news in the farm yard.

Backing-upYesterday Dad was gone so it was just Mom and I doing the irrigation. I actually felt good enough to go with her.  I had just been wagging my tail and watching her drive off, but not today.

Two-Jobs

Today I beat her to her four-wheeler and waited for her to get there and lift me up so I could GO!

Helper-2

I even wanted down so I could check out everything going on, on the farm!

Love-the-Boomer

Mom said she was “DELIGHTED” I was feeling much better!

Up

ME TOO!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—Good-Bye

Farewell!

See ya next year!

WHEREI was out and about checking the happenings on the farm, about three o’clock in the afternoon, when I started hearing lots and lots of hollering…

Good-Bye!

Ta-Ta!

LATER…I HOPE TO SEE YOU LATER!

BYE!

The racket was LOUD!  So I trotted over to the old pinto bean field to see what was happening.

Heading-out

HUH?!?!  WHAT!  The cows are leaving!

Conference

I saw Mr. Davis, Mrs. Davis, and his daughters– Teresa and Rose– sorting the ‘almost-to-be-mommas’ from the already had babies mommas, then herding them to the gate to the road!

Holding-the-Herd

And DOWN the road.

Moooving

I barked and hollered back at them—BYE, I don’t want you to leave, BYE!  I’ve enjoyed having you here!”

Mr.-Davis

Then the next day the Davis’ were all back…this time they separated the older calves from the just born calves, or the calves that were less than a week old.

Round-Up

Driving the babies and their moms over to the pinto bean field, then through the gate…and they were gone also.

Waiting-for-the-Gate

This morning, as Mom was putting all the cats outside with me, Mr. Davis and Teresa stopped and said in two or three days they would have all the cows out.  They want to give the babies a chance to be strong enough to walk to the pastures by their ranch house.

I heard Mom say she would let Terry (Dad) know.  “Thank you.  It’s always nice to have the cows and calves on the place.” She told Davis’.

With a smile and a wave from everyone the Davis’ were off.  So was I…they have a cool dog in the back of the truck…we have major bark-offs as he drives away.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—We Slid into Spring

These days are wonderful!  Mom and Dad, the cats and yours truly—BOOMER the Beagle, have been spending every minute of the day outside doing all sorts of things.

Road-Work

Dad works on his ‘stuff’,

Mom is working on raking around all the outbuildings, the chicken house, the three woodpiles and is heading over to the equipment storage area and the corrals next!

The cats hang around outside and act pitiful.  Just pitiful…gosh, geez, they are outside and the wind blows and messes up their fur, and there is no really comfy bed to lay on, whine, whine, whine.

I get sick of it!

BBeagle

Now ME!  I go out the first rattle out the box every morning.  First light!  And I don’t come back in until the sunsets.  (By that time I’m ready to come in.)

I can’t linger too long in the house, you know…there is a whole farm of snacks out there…first I go out and get snacks.  Then I bring them in and toss them around on the grass for a spell.  After that I EAT them.  Then I take a nap.  After my nap I repeat my run to the fields.

I used to try and bury my snacks…way back when I was new here, but when I went to UNbury them they were gone.  Just Gone! So now I drag them into the yard.  I used to drag them in arrange them in areas….beef jerky here, milk duds there.  But when I was out getting more Mom would come by and gather them all up into a sack and take them to the trash barrel!!!!!

(I have to be wary of rain…for some reason rain melts my milk duds so I try to bury them under leaves and weeds in Mom’s flower beds. Mom doesn’t like that either.  Go figure.)

Mom gathering up my snacks and destroying them Horrifies me!  So now I scatter them here and there and everywhere.  Mom still tries to get them all picked up, but she misses some.  Tee Hee.  Those are the ones I snack on when she isn’t looking.

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO  anywho…

HUH

I repeat this off and on all day.  I want a nice pile of snacks, for when the cows leave in the next couple of weeks.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—Milk Duds and Beef Jerky

2The cows are here!

4

Mom and I are in cow heaven!  Every day Dad, Mom, and I head out and count babies.  Right now…the count this morning was forty five calves on the ground.

3

Some just born overnight, a couple being born, as we drove by, and several are days and even a week or so old.

5

Now I admit, the other thing I like about CALF season is SNACKS! Mom gets rather irritated with me about SNACKS, in calf season, but (golly-geez!), I can’t help myself they are SO good!

8

I have to head-out by myself, as Mom gets grossed out and won’t let me snack.  (I must admit Fuzzy never liked these snacks.  I don’t know why he didn’t, he would just turn his head and walk on by.)

9

The first day of figuring out the farm is now loaded with Milk Duds (calf poopy) and Beef Jerky (after birth) I ate so much I had a belly ache.  Mom told me she didn’t feel one bit sorry for me.  Well, so what, I felt sorry for me.

BUT NOT ENOUGH TO STOP!!!
