Thanks to the Gods Who Create the Creatures —- Monday, September 23, 2019

“I Really love that feeling when you finally find out why that book got its Title!’ Unknown

We have a beautiful young buck roaming our yard at night

The game camera I set up to capture photos of the raccoon’s; captured this wondrous creature

Moving through the flower beds, his coat shimmering in the camera light

The gracefulness of his delicate and slender strong legs, the chiseled planes of his face, the long tufted ever-moving ears are delightful to behold.

Unbeknownst to me, Boomer followed the bucks tracks.ย  (I didn’t know until I checked the camera.)

Thankfully I can enjoy this creature and not be upset with him…I have planted all things deer don’t like to eat.

Now raccoons, let me tell you they enjoy lots of things in the yard…the apricots, the pears, the cherries, the prunes, the wild plums, the apples, and my tomatoes!

Just say’n. ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

Returned—-Sunday, September 22, 2019

“After reading a good book I have a hard time coping with reality.” Unknown

Early in the morning, Stephan, one of the kids renting the farm, stopped and came in for a visit

He wanted to let us know that the alfalfa fields were ours once more.ย  Their contract for three cuttings had finished.

So, as the sun warmed the day, and before the winds generously swept across the farm

Terry and I went out to start the irrigation water in the fields.ย  It is not good to have the alfalfa go into winter dry.ย  Nor, does Terry try to get a fourth cutting.

This allows fields to put on nice growth.ย  After which the cows will have grazing and the plants will be healthy come Spring.ย  Not stressed.

We were pleasantly surprised that Stephan picked up all the siphon tubes in the pinto bean field, readying those fields for harvest, protecting the tubes, and helping us get the farm ready for winter.

Stephan also picked up his tubes so Terry and I had to jocky some around to begin the water in the alfalfa fields.

It was a lovely surprise those gathered siphon tubes. They returned the land as they found it.

Terry and I commented to each other; that it felt really nice to be back out on the land.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Birds and Other Things Friday, September 20, 2019

Mom and I have taken to long walks.ย  Well, longer than normal.

We have to be careful because Mindy cat wants to walk with us and Mom doesnโ€™t want Mindy to get side-tracked; stay out on the farm, and become COYOTE FOOD!

So, Mom puts Mindy in the house then we go out!

And about.

Looking for BIRDS!

(And other things.)

Sometimes Mom,

Mindy, and I go out at night.

Thatโ€™s when Mom likes to take photos of the Moonโ€ฆin every stage of the Moonโ€™s growth.

Sometimes Mom will even get a photo of a wild creatureโ€ฆ

like the Raccoons, who live in the hollow of the Willow tree and like to eat Momโ€™s tomatoes!

Although Mom personally has never gotten a photo of the Raccoons, she did put up a game camera so the game camera could get a photo of the raccoons.

(Photo from Mom’s archives)

The wild geese are plentiful now.ย  Three large skeins have flown over our heads, even while I write to you.

Soon the Sandhill Cranes will be here.ย  Mom says the big birds are back earlyโ€ฆshe thinks we will have an early winter.

But until then, there is still stuff to do in warm Autumn days!

On a Fine Autumn Day —- Thursday, September 19, 2019

Yes, I feed the little wild creatures

It’s my lure.

A wee win for me

A delicious and marvelous treat

Dazzling eyes and tummies!

Creating a bright winter stash

During the long dark winter days.

In the Sun and Clouds We Worked—Wednesday, September 18, 2019

We were over working on some fencing needs

Off and on all day yesterday

We were in the rich pastures

And along the bottom of the hillsides

Back and forth, checking fences, bringing things needed to repair them, bringing trash back home

It was a good feeling to be out in the golden world,

The air was spiced with the mix of weeds, wild alfalfa, and corn pollen

The sun warmed the day and a cooling breeze kept us refreshed

The air is full of sounds of fat pollen-covered bees, nasty grasshopper wings, and the fluttering of butterflies.

Then over-head, in the middle of a large color muting cloud, was the first of the big winter birds; the Canada Geese!

Winter is not far away now.

Welcome Back You Big Beautiful Birds!

There Arching Across the Sky —- Tuesday, September 17, 2019

Off and on for a few days, we have had clouds, then splatters of rain, or nothing,

Just beautiful clouds.

I’m still painting in the house.ย  I, now, have the back porch, the kitchen and the fireplace room painted.

I need to rest my shoulder for a few days before I start again.

Last Sunday I received two gifts, one from my daughter, Kimberly, who took the photo

Of a double rainbow as we were all driving home from the Black Canyon

Then another one from her husband, Cliff; I received that same evening.

Very welcome Rainbows, perfect blessings of magic.

From my world to your heart,

Linda

In the Search of Shadows — Monday, September 16, 2019

I went about for a few days looking for shadows

They were not hard to find, as long as one, timed the time correctly

They were here and there, giving pleasure just by looking

(Boomer asked me if his shadow really was that fat.ย  I told him the shadow was, that is all ๐Ÿ™‚ย  )ย

The fullness of Summer is now long past

Time rushing by like the sloughing of a wind

The light is mellow, no longer a brilliant gold

The shadows deeper

Bringing a chill with them in the early morn

Each day the sun rises later and sinks quicker

With a growing coolness to the air

Promising soon, real soon, hang on…it won’t be long now…until frost descends on the land.

From my world to your heart,

Linda

Water- Gladness to the Heart, the Land, and to Our Eyes — Sunday, September 15, 2019

Our daughter, Kimberly, and son-in-law, Cliff had never been to the East Portal of the Black Canyon so last Sunday Terry and I gathered them up and drove to see where our irrigation water begins.

The Diversion tunnel took ten years to complete, in awful conditions with very basic tools and the technology in the years 1899-1909

Everyone is always amazed at the road just getting to the bottom of the canyon, which is pretty much the road the team and wagons traveled way back when. (It’s a tad scary, just so you know)

The engineering was stunning in the fact the tunnel is almost 6 miles long, through solid rock and soft unstable ground meeting within inches in the middle. The town of LaJane (no longer here) was on the end with the soft soil. (LaJane is pronounced Lu-wan)

Besides the amazing undertaking to get the irrigation water from the Black Canyon to the farm grounds in Montrose and Delta

The views and the history of the canyon are astounding.

The management of the Diversion Tunnel and the water that flows through it is by the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users

One of the ditch riders and his family live in the house in the canyon. He takes care of the dam, the water flow, and other specialized requirements.

The sound of roaring water, the magnificent black walls

Made for a beautiful Sunday afternoon.

Then to round out the fullness of the day, we saw a Rainbow!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— The Things I Do, by Mindy the Cat—Friday, September 13, 2019

Hello!ย  Itโ€™s Me, Mindy-Lou, Min-Min, Kit-Cat Brown.ย  Boomer is taking a rest today so; I get to talk!

My days are Full! Full! FULL!

Often times throughout the day I go out to the haystack yard and check to see if there are any mice out there I can catch and eat!

(Eating is the best part of catching, donโ€™t ya, know!)

Then I prowl around in Momโ€™s gardensโ€ฆ

sometimes I chase birds, that ALWAYS get me scolded.

I like to work with Dad in his shops—so, of course,

I have to walk out to the shops to see if Dad is out there.

Lately, it has been getting COLD at night.ย  Usually, Mom invites me in, but during the warm times I like to stay out all night, then come inside and sleep most of the morning.

If I canโ€™t get Mom to let me in the dark of the night,

(when I am good and ready—not when Mom asks me to come in), I have to walk around to the room we sleep in and YOWL REALLY LOUD!

I do that until Mom comes outside and hollers for me.ย  Then I run as fast as my kitty legs can take me into the house.

Last night Mom and I went for a long walk to see the moon.ย  Boomer didnโ€™t want to go, he just looked at Mom, closed his eyes and slept in the house while we were gone.

Mom and I had a MARVELOUS time!

It was just perfect MOM and I!

Mindy the Cat

We Have Been Ever so Dry—-Thursday, September 12, 2019

The wind kicks up the dust something fierce

And a quick ride down the farm roads always leave a rush of dust behind

But, the last few days have brought us rain clouds

And the beauty of a bright wonderous rainbow

Glinting in the sky!

What wonderful joy to see…Rainbows in the sky.ย  (Although, right here on our farm, we didn’t get any rain—but’s that’s okay we did get see Rainbows anyway)!
