About Dayphoto

My name is Linda Brown. I live on a farm on the western slope of Colorado, in the high mountain desert. I’ve lived here all my life, hailing back four generations on my father’s side. Today I blog about our farm, the everyday activities that keep the farm going. I also write about my thoughts and dreams and goals. On Friday’s I always write about TLC Cai-Cai. Our sweet kitty who helps keep the farm safe. And Boo Berry Betty, a breeder dog learning to be a Farm Dog! The lovely thing about blogging it opens the world up for all of us to reach out and meet people from many different cultures and different ways of life. You can find me every day (but Saturday) at https://coloradofarmlife.wordpress.com/ Your Friend on a Western Colorado Farm, Linda Brown

One of the Links Between Heaven and Earth —- Tuesday, May 28, 2019

I think birds are one of those magical creatures (akin to Fairies, elves, and gnomes)

Who are gifts to us from the Heavens

Since they have wings, they must be the messengers of the Angels

Sorta like email or text messages are to us today

It’s up to us to really read and understand what is being said, by what is felt in our hearts.

While out and about yesterday, Boomer and I came across a little Killdeer having a dust bath.

What sort of message was I receiving?

Walk carefully on the face of the earth, and be a friend to all…an eternal message always.

From my world to your heart,

Linda

We Live in Hope —-Monday, May 27, 2019

The wind picked up yesterday

Becoming a menace by the end of the day.

Then the weather cooled down rapidly…going from 82* to 72* (27c – -13c)  within 60 minutes

The wind shrieked,

and pelted us with little shards of dust

Late, late into the evening, all the little hummingbirds feasted at the feeders, trying desperately to fill up– to stay warm, before the thunderstorms arrive today.

This winter storm is to be in here for three days, but…

Maybe if I am lucky I will get to see a rainbow!

That will be really special.

I took this photo years ago at our home town cemetery.
I think it is still appropriate even today.

Today we remember.

All those who cared for us and our way of life.

Allowing us to live in hope.

Linda

Two Beautiful Days — Sunday, May 26, 2019

Yesterday and today are just wonderful!

So beautiful in fact your heart almost aches

The weather people are telling us it won’t last

Another winter storm is coming in tonight with temperatures dropping twenty degrees below normal

There will snow in the high country again…inches to feet of more snow, where the snow already lays thick

But for a little, the rest of this day, of utter loveliness, we will go forth and enjoy every minute

Before that encroaching winter storm descends.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— On a Walk with Mom

Mom picked up Mindy and headed into the house with her.  “Stay inside, Min-Min.  Beaglie and I are going for a walk and you really can’t come this time. I promise you we will all go for a walk later on today…you, me, dad and Boomer.”

Dad headed up to do something or other at the pasture in the Upper End

The storm clouds were finally moving away from the farm

Mom and I headed off…Mom with her camera and me with my very clever Beagle nose.

I scared up a pheasant for Mom

Not once but twice!  Mom gave me lots of pats for that, “Pheasants are really hard to get a photo of, Thank you, Boomer!”

Over at the equipment area, Mom and I saw a Chipmunk

He or she was eating something

Then he or she, or she or he saw us and scampered off

We walked on, over the hill, on to the fire road hill, then down the trail on the COYOTE HILL…I hate that hill!

But Mom doesn’t know that’s COYOTE HILL, only animals know that—people don’t seem to know much about animals and hangouts.

There we saw another (or the same) pheasant.  Mom was delighted!

We walked a long time, then headed over to the Look Out Hill and Mom saw a squirrel

When Mom and I walked back to the equipment area we saw a Quail where the chipmunk had been

Then we headed home

On the way we met Dad he was coming back from making ditches…geez, we must have been gone a long time.

Later that afternoon I helped Mom and Dad gather up fence posts for her gardens. (Mom puts up fences to keep the chickens out of her garden beds.)

Life is good!

All Mom has to do is call my name and I’m ready to go!

My Beloved Maternal Grandmother —- Thursday, May 23, 2019

My brother and I were most blessed to live ‘just up the orchard’ from our maternal grandparents, Bill and Ruth/ Granddad, and Grammy.

Our paternal grandmother just lived a mile up the road from us in the little village/town called Eckert.

But today, this is a story about my sweet, kind, gentle grandmother, Ruth Love (Wootton) Thomas.

She was a fantastic southern cook, loved to tell us stories, was a teacher of education to children in the First through Third grades and at one point the postmistress of their little town in New Mexico.

My brother and I could spend as much time as we wanted at their house, as long as we walked (we ran, just say’n) through the orchard and let Mom know we were going and then let Gram know when we were heading back home.

Life was simple then.

Over time, after Granddad passed on; Grammy’s mind deteriorated into a form of dementia, of which we never really learned the medical name.

It was hard and sad to see her become a totally different person than who she had been — she became suspicious, fanciful, full of anger and delusional.

One afternoon, when I was visiting with her, she told me that she had now become the Velveteen Rabbit. It was a very sad and poignant moment.  It broke my heart.  My heart broke even more when she reached over and patted me on the knee.

“No matter what,” she said with a sly little smile, “I am still real.”  I held her hand and agreed.

For some reason, she has been weighing heavy on my mind– these last few days.

I can see her as she was when I was a child, who she was when I had my children, and then what the horrible disease, which turned her into a whole other person, just before she died.

Then last night I dreamed I was her the day she stepped out the shell of her body and went to the other side.

I dreamed Granddad/ Will was there, waiting to give me (Grammy) a gentle tug on my hand to lift me up to him.

He made my heart sing, Will always made my heart sing.

I turned to Will…. “It’s been hard, Dear One,” I told him. “I had a highly functioning brain then the rug was pulled out from me.  The fall has been long and terrifying.”

“I know, My Sweet Thing, I know.” He smiled. “Here take my hand”, he offered.

So I did.

In the Long Soft Light of the Heavens — Wednesday, May 22, 2019

We are going on with more and more rain, snow in the high country, and
And a chill the little summer birds are not used to experiencing
Although my yard and flowers are rather enjoying their new fate of cool,
(cold) wet rainy days and nights
As for me, my heart yearns for sunshine
Still, I must marvel at the amazing beauty of the very wet earth
And the sun on the snow-covered mountains
Each day is still a marvel.  More than a deceptive dream as some would argue,
but a true gift from the God(s)
Valerie (a dearest and wonderful friend) sent me one of her favorite poems by the Sufi poet Kabir…

O servant, where dost thou seek Me?

Lo! I am beside thee.
I am neither in temple nor in mosque: I am neither in Kaaba nor
in Kailash:
Neither am I in rites and ceremonies, nor in Yoga and
renunciation.
If thou art a true seeker, thou shalt at once see Me: thou shalt
meet Me in a moment of time.

And at the end of this lovely poem, Valerie wrote: “I treasure those lovely words and thoughts”…

As do I.

From my world to your heart,

Linda

A Quiet Type of Joy —- Tuesday, May 21, 2019

If I were a poet I would write of the extraordinary

Of friendships, and gentle happiness

And uncommon little peeks into wee bits of life.

If I were a poet.

Be Open to Your God —- Monday, May 20, 2019

Every minute, every moment, every second of your life

Be open to your God,

If you are open your God will be there.

You will always receive an answer

Even answers you don’t want to receive

But if you never ask for an answer

or look to see if your God is with you

Then the God(s) cannot answer you, lead you, or be there for you

But, O! My!

When your God(s) answers

It is so wonderful and terrifying

(Rainbow a gift from my daughter Shannon to me, and now to you)

It is like having wings lift you up into Glory!

From my world to your heart,

Linda

The Moment Magic Happens — Sunday, May 19, 2019

Boomer and I went searching for the Blue Moon, the Flower Moon, the Full Moon of May

We saw it flitting in an out of the wind-driven clouds, splashing silver moonlight

Here and there.

Until the clouds receded and only the clear sky remained.

No Blue Moon for us, but still an amazing sight of the lapped and covered moon.

From my world to your heart,

Linda

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— On the Game Camera

Mom likes to move the game camera here and there and everywhere.  She says it’s fun to see what shows up.

So here we go—Game Camera Time

Mom and I off on one of our walks.

Going

Coming Back

Almost Home

Then she put it by the equipment area to see if there were still coyotes

There are.

So, Dad, Mom and I went for a ride to see if we could find the den

First, we went out at night

We didn’t find anything

Then we went in the daytime

And didn’t find anything

Dad thinks they are living on the neighbor’s over in the brush hill, but we don’t know for sure.

So far there hasn’t been coyote sign in the yard or the farmyard since Spring started.  Mom says THAT is a very good thing.

So Mom brought it home and put it in the garden

Life is good!
