The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Here’s What’s Happening on the Farm

First off and foremost Dad has stopped the water on the pinto beans!  That means summer is officially over!

You see in a week or two or three depending on the weather Dad will be harvesting the pinto beans.  That means lots of work.  First, the pinto beans are deprived of water.  That is so the bean plants will get the signal it’s time to dry up.

Secondly, it also lets the ground dry up so Dad can go into the field with the pinto bean puller and pull all the plants out the ground and let them dry until the leaves fall off the stems.

Once the leaves fall off the stems then Dad knows it is time to get out the PINTO BEAN COMBINE!!!

And the big orange truck.

Up and down the rows Dad will go filling the combine hopper with this year’s pinto beans.  Once the hopper is full he will dump the hopper into the big orange truck.  He will do that until the big orange truck is full.

Then he will drive to the Beanery.  Mom and I come in the pick up because the big orange truck usually has to stay at the Beanery until it is its turn to be unloaded.  Sometimes that is way into the night.  Dad doesn’t like to sit there and wait until it’s time.

If Dad gets to dump early then Mom and I come on back home.

This goes on and on until the whole field is harvested.

Summer is over.  “Sorta on the sad side”, Mom says.  Heck, I don’t care.  I like each and every day.

And my most favorite day of all…. WHEN a Delivery Truck drives down the long, long lane into the farmyard!

WHOO HOO!  BAY! HALLER! BARK! HOWL!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Catching UP

Well, it seems like I need to do some catching up.  Well, not me, but you.  Well not you catching me up, but me catching you up.

It’s still terribly dry here.

And the wind blows every day, —- still.

The deer are enjoying the corn.

They like corn just like Mom and Dad.

The coyotes eat the corn also.  There isn’t anything a coyote won’t eat —-just say’n.

The Barn Swallows are doing a real good job of keeping the mosquitoes gone.  They are on another batch of little kids so they eat lots of flying bugs.  Mom and Dad and Mindy and I think that is a VERY GOOD THING!

The very busy raccoons are coming into the yard all the time.  They robbed Mom’s tomato patch the other night and had a huge feast.

So, Mom covered up the watermelon hoping to protect the three which are left. (One was eaten and Mom said it wasn’t even ripe.)

Freddy Fox comes to see me every so often.  He is shy and won’t come around if Mom is out on a walk with me…but I see him and give him tag wags.

The other night we almost ran into a skunk.  Mom was extremely careful.  She called me back to her and made me walk with her into the cornfield where we hid—and Mom took a photo.

That tail went up, up and more up, but nothing came out.  Which was a very good thing.  Mom and I were extremely nervous we were going to get sprayed.

But I guess the big news is Ethie and Dottie don’t live here anymore.  Ethie’s real parents came and got her.  They also took Dottie because Ethie and Dottie were BFF’s now and would have been sad without each other.

Then Mom was sad about not having Ethie and Dottie.  She kept saying that the yard seems empty without chickens.  This went on for several days.

My oldest sister (the one who has my cousin Etta) came up and gave mom TWO young hens.

Little Bit One and Two.  They do everything together. If one turns left the other one does too.  If one runs down the road the other one is right with them.  Mom says they must have been twins.  (Can chickens have twin eggs?  It’s a wonder all eggs look the same to me.)

Anyway, Mom is happy again…two hens to scratch and run in her yard.  I have two hens who like to take naps close to me…and Mindy has two hens who like to chase her.

Mindy is not very happy about that!!!!

Oh!  Have to go!…………….

It’s UPS TRUCK TIME!

The Languid Air of Summer —- Sunday, July 1, 2018

Our air is hot! Hot and dry.

But here we are.  The middle of summer… the Second cutting of alfalfa!

The smells in the house have been lovely.  Early morning dew on the drying hay, hot summer sun at the middle of the day, and crisp smells of sharp clean scent in the evening.

The whispering sound as Terry and I fork over the end, getting ready for the baler.

Then the rich sound of the baler…while Boomer and I move through the field making sure the bales are sitting on their sides for the stack wagon.

A very hot and BORED beagle riding behind me.  He makes it for about a 1/2 hour, then after that, he is done.  Gets off and hides in the shade.

The second cutting of alfalfa! We are in the middle of Summer!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— My Ordinary Day

Nothing much is happening here.  No adventures, no real worries, nothing that a good beagle can’t deal with.

Just Ordinary Days.

We like ordinary days.

Ordinary days…don’t have big problems to solve,

Or scary coyotes to deal with,

Or something hard to handle.

They just have the ordinary things to do:

Go with Mom and do whatever she is doing.  Which means I follow behind and sit and watch Mom, while she does what she does

Or I sniff around getting the news, while mom does whatever she does

Anytime Mom gets on the four-wheeler I’m right there to go with her, all wadded up on the back seat with my body touching her body so she knows I’m safe.

Sometimes I sit up straight and help Mom drive…I lend her my nose so she can go where the best smells are.

Then when she is ‘doing’ something out on the farm, I take off and check out all the happenings going on from the last time I was up there two hours ago.

Sometimes I scare up a pheasant or two

Sometimes some Quail, or rabbits. Or the summer geese.  But I never chase any of them.  Mom say’s I’m a strange beagle, beagle usually like to hunt animals.

Well, not this beagle.  I just like to gather news.

Once Mom left me up at the Upper End (because I didn’t want to go back home just then).

It was HOT walking all the way back home.  I need to remind myself when Mom calls and I hear the four-wheeler start…I NEED to get back to Mom.  The walk home this time of year is long and hot!

But the most wondrous time of ‘just ordinary days’

is when the UPS driver comes down the long lane to our farm house!

That is the best barking joy I can ever think of! (and if it’s the nice UPS driver, I always get a treat!)

April, Wet and Chill—-Tuesday, May 8, 2018

April left us, that wet and chill month, with the massive winds that searched into every crevice and ripped off shingles…the chill of the spring dusk causing the furnace to turn on now and again.

Still the plants woke, putting on a few green leaves, then more, until they studded the flower beds and shimmered the pastures in newness only Spring can bring.

The little humming birds have arrived…I think there are six breeding pairs here so far.  The air around their little wings humming so much it it’s like a harp making music.

May has arrived and the winds have changed…growing warm and gentle instead of those massive things we had in March and April.

A calm time.  The skies full of sunlight.  A time of growing and acceptance.

AND MY LILACS ARE BLOOMING!
The first time in years!

MAY! What a joyous time!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Back to Every Day Normal

Life has settled down after the whole Mystery Where I Used a Secret (Idea/Weapon/Gift from some friends).

We are having huge winds again.  Mom and I are getting very tired of them.  And MOM likes wind.  She always makes me go for a walk with her when the wind is blowing.  But if you walk in this wind a dog has to crawl and a person has to bend over.  Not good.

But back to everyday life—-

Mindy and I go to walks with Mom every day.  Sometimes at night.  I Always go with Mom at night, but not always Mindy.  If she is inside sleeping on the bed, or the sofa, or the big table, or her favorite chair, Mom just lets her sleep.  “Let’s just let Mindy get her rest, Boomer.  This walk will be with you and I.” Mom says as we head out the back door.

That works for me.  Heck having Mindy Min-Min Lou tag along works for me.  I’m really pretty easy going. So whatever Mom wants…that works for me.

I have been keeping a sharp nose out for strangers {human or animal} coming down the long lane into our farm yard, or heck even out of the farm.

News is What my nose is all about.  Checking the news from here to there and every which where.

When Mom and Dad are working at the Upper End or in the little field next to the Upper End, I always, always go over and check out the big wood pile.  Critter’s live in there you know.  Ground squirrels, the fox, skunks, but…thankfully…no Badgers!!

Badgers are mean, scary, and completely terrifying.  Trust me on that.

If Mom and Dad go to town and come back in the dark…I always, always make sure to meet them half way down the lane…sometimes Mom stops and gives me a lift back home.  Sometimes not.

I guess she stopped asking lots, because I would turn her down preferring to take my time following the car back home.

News…out there, you see.  I might miss something.  I know Mom and Dad are now home and well… there just might be news on the way back to the house.

Like the Raccoons who’ve taken to coming down to the canal to wash their food.  They are so silly.  They wash EVERYTHING they eat.  I mean everything.  Sometimes whatever they are washing turns to mush and floats away.  But still they do it.

Now that the weather has warmed up Mom lets me ride in the back of the pick-up when we go somewhere fun.  It’s been too cold so I’ve had to pant my way,  to wherever we are going, in the back seat, sometimes with the window down, but sometimes not.

Anyway…on nice days…I get to ride in the back.

Wind in the face, smells in the nose…ears flapping.  A dog cannot ask for more.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Shhhh I Have a Secret to Tell You

“Hey, Romeo!  Come quickly!”  Lady brayed!

“Okay…what’s up?”  Romeo put himself in to ‘trot’ gear and headed toward Lady the mule.

“OH, Mom, Dad, and the Beagle are coming up with treats for us!”  Romeo replied. “You stay there, Lady and I’ll go meet them.”

“Yumm apples!”  Lady woofed hers down.

“Yuck!” Romeo replied.  “I only like carrots”

“Hey, Boomer….whisper, whisper, whisper…the next time you come up with the folks, tell you Mom to bring CARROTS!”

“Okay, Romeo…but if you will just go over to where Mom is standing you will see she does have carrots…Just for you”.

“OH!  I guess she does!”

Silly horse!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— I Had Company

My first cousin, Butter Doyle, a Cocker Spaniel—came for a short visit with me.

This was the first time we have had a ‘spend the night’.

It went really well.

Although, Mom had to keep close tabs on Butter so I wouldn’t teach him new tricks…Like eating COW POOP! Or rolling in a really nice warm gushy cow pie.

Mom keeps a close eye on me for the very same reasons.

Anyway we had great walks…Butter and I went with mom THREE TIMES during the night—the moon was bright, the air brisk and Mom couldn’t sleep.  Worked out great for Butter and me.

Butter was rather lonely without his folks, but I think I helped him — I shared my snacks, my water bowl, and my dog dish.

Then Butter’s Mom and Dad were here and swoosh they were gone.

Butter’s Mom and Dad are my Mom’s brother and sister-in-law.

Mindy was glad when Butter left—she hid the whole time.  The second Butter drove down the long lane to the road she was in the house.

That night she claimed her spot on Dad, while they watched TV.

OH!

I HAVE COOL NEWS!

Rocky Chaco Man is back to work.  Chaco the Service Dog is back doing Service work at the Mesa County Library in Grand Junction, Colorado.

The Library just started up the reading program and asked Chaco to come read with the little kids.  Chaco has been a Reading Service Dog for a long, long time. He started his work in Castle Rock, Colorado and is continuing it here.

YAY! ROCKY CHACO MAN! You are a Hero!

Oh…one more thing

It’s a whopping 9* fahrenheit here this morning! That’s -12.7778 celsius, if you don’t live here.

A bit cold!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Wrap Up

Here it is the end of 2017…I’ve had a very good year…many adventures—

The UnMystery,  where I made it home safe and sound from those wild crazy coyotes and

The Mystery of Nothing, where I got caught in a flood.

I’ve helped Mom and Dad in everything they did on the farm:  Irrigate, sniff at poop…oh, wait, Mom and Dad didn’t sniff at poop.  Worked the land, they worked the land I looked for yummy dead stuff to roll in, you know all the important stuff.

I did get sick this summer.  Scared Mom and I.  But Mom sat with me and held my paw, took me to the Vet for special shots for pneumonia, and rubbed ice cubes on my ears and arm pits.  Sure felt good.

Sammy, My Kitty Buddy, stayed by my side the whole time.

It’s lonely without Sam…he joined my Bested Friend ForEVER this month of December.  It’s rather strange to not having Sammy sleeping close to me.  Mindy Cat is too independent to hang around me much.

Still Mindy and I always go with Mom, or Mom and Dad, when they go for a walk.  Mindy and I touch noses so Mom knows we are ‘good’ friends also.

This past week two of the grandkids have been here.  I didn’t go with Dad and Blade, but I did go with Mom and Tally wherever they went.  Mindy hid from everyone.

This Christmas I thought I was going to have to get the White Elephant Present…

But Thankfully someone else got it for THEIR dog!!

TEE HEE!

Now we have cows here…lots of cows here.  Lots.

So this morning a cow did what cows really like to do….she got out!

She was really easy to put back in…Mom made me stay inside…I know I could have helped very nicely, but Mom wouldn’t let me.

Anyway, it’s been a pretty good year all in all.  The bad part was Sammy, but he was in lots of pain.  I didn’t want him to be in so much pain.  Then one day he wasn’t in pain anymore.

Oh, I forgot.  Lady came to live with us.

Well, with my sister Shannon and Romeo really.  But she is part of all our family even if she out of the pasture by my house.

(Lady wants to know if this photo of her makes her look fat!)

Dad, Mom, Myself, Boomer the Sherlock Beaglie, and Mindy Min-Min say

Thank you (all), for being part of our everyday blogging family!

Happy New Year!

Boomer

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday— Cow Check

There are one hundred and eighty three pregnant cows on our farm.

183!

Now THAT’S a lot of cows.

Every day we go for a Cow Check.  Dad says it’s mostly a fence check, but Mom says it’s a cow check…for me it’s a check on the manure to see if there are still little bits of corn in there………….

Of course, when that happens…me checking on the cow patties I always get

“BOOMER! GET BACK HERE!  NOW” from Mom.

Dad thinks I’m funny.

I come back to Mom, but I take my ever so lovely time getting there.

Then when I get to mom she picks me up and hoists me onto the back of the four-wheeler and tells me to STAY.

And she says—“Your breath STINKS”!

I don’t get why she gets so wound up about it, but oh, well, whatever.

Then we ride all around the whole place checking on everything.  The cows are really good about staying in, but with 183 cows the feed starts to slim down.  When the feed slims down the cows start reaching over the fences until they stretch them and break them.

So far so good.  Only the electric fence for the equine pasture was broken.

Once they got that fence down the electricity didn’t work anymore so the whole herd could tromp into the horse pasture and have a WEED eating field day!

Which they did.

So now the equines run with the cows and the cows eat up all the weeds the equines don’t like to eat.

Pretty much a win-win.

Except Mom, Dad, and Shannon had to go roll up the electric fence and take down the stakes.

And Dad had to fix the corral gate where the cows pushed and pushed and shoved on it.

Now what about Me?

Mom made me stay on the four-wheeler the WHOLE time they worked on the gate and the electric fence.  SHISH!

Then when we get back we sometimes sit by Dad’s fireplace and just rest.  Mom says Dad has done a nice job out in the shop.

Just being with Mom and Dad where ever works for me!
