When Out on the Farm—Thursday, November 17, 2016

‘Twas the night before Yesterday, when out in the farm
deer1
A tiny young deer came looking, looking
deer2
She was walking so softly, so softly with care,
deer3
Her Momma had said be gone —not  here;
deer-4
Being lonely, so lonely she came searching, searching wanting to be fed;
deer-5
When out next to the trash can there arose such a clatter,
deer-7
Boomer sprang from his bed to see what was the matter.
deer1
Away, away out the back door he flew
scram
Scaring a raccoon so lively and quick.
deer3
And then, in a twinkling, the tiny young hooves
scram

Following the raccoon with hooves that go click!

Love,

Linda

P.S.  We think the Momma deer has told this young doe it’s time to leave.  She is very determined to hang around our farm house and in the farm yard (there go all my flowers, but oh, well).  Terry thinks come spring she will move back up to the Upper End or over by the equipment.  Until then she is determined to hang around here.  Really not very afraid of Boomer.  She is afraid of the lights suddenly turning on.

P. P. S.S.  A pretty bad poem. Chuckle!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—-Just Say’n

When the little kids were here they brought all three of their cats AND Hank Puff with them….oh, yes, and four fish.  They were bringing all these critters because they were moving from Craig, Colorado to Battlement Mesa, Colorado.

The little kids and all the critters stayed with us and their Aunt Shannon, my oldest sister.

Well, wouldn’t you know it one of the cats bolted out the door at Shannon’s and became….lost!

After days and days of looking for O’Malley, setting a live trap in the garage at Shannon’s the looking for O’Malley had to stop.  Either the cat was lost or didn’t want to be found.

We are all sad.

Then a week ago today (Friday) something tried to break into the front porch of our house (around mid-night)…climbed right up the screen door and rattled it mightily.  Scared Mom right out of the bed.

Off and on throughout the night, this someone tried to climb into the front porch of the house, Sammy and I sat up a stern watch protecting the place.  Well, really, Sammy the cat and I slept through the whole thing.

The next morning Mom and Dad decided to set a live trap to capture whoever it is trying to break in; thinking it might be O’Malley, since she hung-out up here for several days before being taken down to Aunt Shannon’s.

Mom baited the trap with yummy canned cat food, set the trap and proceeded to wait.

I, Sherlock Boomer, took it upon myself to find O’Malley and bring her home to the kids.

Flee-2

The second night I patrolled the long lane from our house to the mailbox….nothing.

Flee-1Just one of the deer skittering through.

Rac

On the third night I headed out toward the Butler Bins…I had smelled some pretty interesting smells out there…raccoons.  I didn’t tell Mom it was raccoons…one never knows, raccoons are very clever at breaking into things.  Maybe it was one of them trying to get into the house.

Beagle-in-Olathe

The fourth day Mom changed out the canned cat food.  Then Mom, Dad, and I headed up to Olathe, Colorado to get some parts for Dad’s pressure washer.

I scanned the world looking for O’Malley.

Nothing.

I did see dogs along the way; we had some great barks at each other.

The fifth day—nothing

In-the-cageThe sixth day—I took care of the cat food.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—-Stuff

Shooting-Feelers1

My days are pretty much just rolling along.  We are starting to see little vines and flower buds on the pinto beans.  I could care less, but Mom and Dad think it’s a HUGE deal.  I just wag my tail and agree with them.

Baby-CornThe baby corn is popping up on the corn stalks.  If I move through the corn rows I come out will corn pollen on me.  Dad says this is a scary time for corn, the deer like to eat the silk.  If they eat the silk the corn won’t make.  Dad always gets really worried about this time of year.  Mom says it’s our 10% tithe.

Apricot-Theif

The fox and the raccoon are helping Mom clean up all the apricots.  Fox can climb trees, did you know that?  So can raccoons.  We have two trees they climb up, to the very top, and get those little apricot fruit Mom can’t reach.

Fox

Mom says we share here…works for her and works for them.  Also works for me, because I get to sniff all the news when they are on the farm and in the farm yard!

Sam-my-sam

Mom, Dad, Sammy-Sam, and I sit outside and watch all the hummingbirds every evening.

Little-Supper

We have four pair of Rufus Hummingbirds this year…Mom is really excited.  She says she counted about 30 little hummers.  I don’t get Mom’s excitement, it’s just part of the birds who live on our place.
Footprints-2

Now what I find exciting is FOOTPRINTS in the mud!  THAT is exciting!

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—News of Our Work

Up

We are finishing up lots of things now…Lots of stuff.

I love this time of year!  There is Always something to do…sorta like spring.  Only opposite.  In the spring we are ‘putt’n stuff in the ground’ and in the fall we are taking stuff OFF the ground. 🙂

Blue-Skies-2

So far we’ve had really pretty nice weather…blue skies and slight breezes.  Keeps the heat and the bugs off a dog.  And er, my people also.

Boomer-helping-1

We are still irrigating…that’s the best part for me.

Corn-Tunnel I sniff out the news in the corn tunnels,

Skin

check for interesting things in the alfalfa field….I saw where a snake shed its skin.  Looked like a pretty big snake to me!

Racc

The raccoons keep coming in my yard at night.  I chase them off…there is NO room for a raccoon in our yard…they can have the whole farm, but NOT my yard!

Coming

I like to run as fast as I can in the fields…I don’t know a dog out there that doesn’t like to run and feel his ears flapping on his head…makes a dog feel free!

Scout-and-WillowMy sister, Shannon, has a new member to her family…Scout, the pinto horse.  He is really a neat horse…although, I AM a tad afraid of him…I’ve never been around a horse IN MY LIFE!   Now Willow, one of Shannon’s cats, LOVES Scout…they do all sorts of things together…I like to hover way over there (somewhere Not close) and just watch…Scout seems so BIG!

Net-Web

We have a cool spider in the yard…it makes a NET for a web.  I haven’t seen the spider yet, but I keep looking.

Fuzzy-Chasing-Water

The bean harvest is done.  We are still chasing water’, as Fuzzy used to say,

MOM

Fuzzy lives over the rainbow bridge now, Mom and I still miss him loads.

Shadow-Boomer

I have the bestest life in the whole wide world!  Running Free, riding on the four-wheeler with Mom, gathering news, gosh, just so many great things to do every day!

Boomer

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—NEWS

Mom buys me toys to play with…but I don’t like them.

Mom throws me balls…I chase them sorta…Fuzzy and I used to place chase with each other, but not really.  We enjoyed chase the fox, or chase the squirrel, or splash in the ditch more.  Well, ummmmmmmm, Fuzzy enjoyed splash the ditch; I liked (and still do) GATHERING NEWS!!!

LOL!

News for the day!

11

Mom moved a couple of the garden toads from under my dog houses to her corral garden.

11

They really seem to like it out there…works better than getting living under my dog house.

Ditch-Creature

We have frogs in the irrigation ditches!  I love, LOVE, to put my nose on them and watch them hop away.

feet

Our yard is full of birds…they sing us awake every morning and chirp sleepy little songs in the evening to put us to bed.

Quail

Lots of Gambol’s Quail this year.  Dad is really happy we have more pheasants than last year.  We lost lots of pheasants a few years back and it’s taken awhile for them to recover.

13

There are baby raccoons in one of the trees in the yard.  Cute little things!

Rac

There are raccoons in the yard, in the farm yard, and out of the ditch.  There are as many raccoon as there are fox; is seems.

Good-Kitty

As for the home front—Sammy does a very good job of keeping the mice down.  (I’m glad that his job…it’s NOT something I’m ever going to do—Fuzzy would do it, but NOT ME!)

Looking for the mailman

Well, that’s the news for today.  I’m off, now, to get ready and bark the mailman down the road…he should be coming anytime now.

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday—Full Moon on Friday the 13th

lHey, FUZZY!!!  Wake-up, Fuzzy!  Today is Friday the 13th!  Not only is it Friday the 13th we have a FULL MOON— TONIGHT!!!

YIPPEE!!!

We won’t be alive the next time this comes along, in fact Mom and Dad won’t be alive…it won’t happen again until Friday,

August 13th 2049!

How very cool is this!!

Hummmmmmmmmm, snort, skurkle….wha, what, Boomer?

Full Moon, Fuzzy!  AND IT’S FRIDAY THE 13th!

Last year we had three Fridays the 13th’s but this year there is only ONE and there is a Full Moon with it!

Hey, that is pretty neat!  What do you think we should do tonight, Boomer?

Lots of people are really suspicious over dates like this, but I don’t see any reason to be nervous, Fuzzy.   Heck, what bad thing can happen?…the sky is full of bright silver light, we will get to go with a walk with Mom in the moonlight and it’s really warm so we won’t be bothered by the cold at all.

Okay, Boom…let’s get to going:

  1.  First let’s holler over to Hank and let him know it what today is.

Okay…
Bark, Bark, HOWWWLLLLLLL! HEY! HANK!!! GUESS WHAT TONIGHT IS?

WOOF! WOOF!

Bark, Yip, yap….repeat and repeat again and again and again.

Oh, this is good, Pepper is on the line…HEY, PEPPER…You Know what tonight is…..?

Oh!  BOOTS is joining in…Welcome, Boots…guess what tonight is?

Hey, this is really cool everybody in the neighborhood is talking on the dog telephone!

  1. Let’s tell the Coyotes….Every dog in the neighborhood…yipping and yelling!

“You soft as marshmallow house dogs…what do you think you are doing bother us real DOGS?  You are just pretend dogs.  Snarl, growl,

Whooooooooooooooooooooooo!”

  1. OOPS….MOM JUST CAME OUT and MADE US COME INTO THE HOUSE!

Shhhhhhhhhhh, she said

  1.  Pant, pant, puff, pant….sit by Mom’s bed and act like your are suffocating Fuzzy, so we can get back outside…after all TIME IS A WASTING!“Oh, alright…go on back out.  But be quiet!!!”  Mom warned as she let us out the back door.
  1.  RACCOON, FUZZY!  LET’S GO GET HIM!!!

AWHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

BAM!!!! OW!!!!  Boomer!  I tripped and fell and bloodied my nose.

Darn thing, just won’t stop bleeding!

  1. YIKES!   SKUNK ——————– BOOMER!!!  Slow down, boy!  There is a skunk by the grain bin!
  1. Hey, dogs….chitter, chatter,  squeak…you can’t catch me

GET HIM BOOM!!!!  Get the raccoon!!

  1. Come on Fuzzy…he’s heading to the old tree by the canal
  2. Put y’er brakes on Boom…he’s gone.  We’ll never get him up the tree.

Okay, Fuzzy.  Let’s see if there is anything else out here.  We haven’t been this far up the ditch bank for several days…..sniff, sniff, snuff…do you smell anything, Fuzzy?

Nope, not very good, my nose is stuffed up.  But I do think I can smell those two cats from the neighbor way over the way.  They passed here about an hour ago.

10. Boy, the moonlight is sure bright.  Hummmmmmmmmmmm  oh, yes…ahhhhh…ooooooooo, this is really nice.  Come on, Fuzzy…you are going to like this.

11.Ah…no…I don’t think so, Boomer.  That’s just something I really don’t like.

12. Ummmm.  Listen….Mom is out…she’s calling us to go for her mid-night walk.  Well, I guess, tonight it more like her two in the morning walk…  Listen, Boom…we gotta go!

Okay, Fuzzy….just a dollop more.  Mom, is going to love me!  Just wait until she smells this great perfume….roll, wiggle, squiggle, squirm…yes!  I’m ready to go, Fuzzy.

Come on then, Mom is heading our way…we’ will intercept her at the bend in the road.

13. “YUCK!  Boomer!  What in the world did you roll in?”  Mom GAGGED!  (Actually, Mom almost puked)… “Boomer! UGH!”

But it is really nice, Mom.  Really, just take a good whiff…see you do like it.

MOM!!! WHERE ARE YOU GOING?

She went back into the house, Boomer.  I’ll bet you get to have a bath in the morning.

WHAT!  And lose my great perfume?

Darn, I guess a full moon on Friday the 13th does bring some sort’a bad luck.

Perfume

Pout, pout…I really wanted to wear my perfume for a long, long time.

Sammy-Sam the cat

Catevery day and all night he patrols the farm. He used to go way over to Misty’s and check out everything over there, but last winter he ate a poisoned mouse and just hasn’t felt like tackling that huge long walk anymore.

PICT0008

Of course, age is creeping up on him…he turned 13 this year. Still Sammy-Sam does a good job of gathering news and information from around the farm buildings and the house.

IMG_3485

Dad-–Dad went up to the Upper End to check to see if any Aliens had landed.  Mom, Fuzzy and I went along.  Mom checked out the drain ditch and Dad walked to the end of the irrigation ditch.

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — For One Day Only

Last week we had a huge ice storm, then Mom and Dad LEFT!!!

Mom talked to both of us and told us they were going on a little trip, they would be gone three days and two nights, but they WOULD BE BACK!!!

Then she petted us and gave us kisses on the nose and really nice back scratches and asked us to do a good job of taking care of everything while they were gone.

We gave Mom lots of kisses on her hand and arm and said we would.

Three

It was a LONG TIME UNTIL THEY GOT BACK!

Three days is FOREVER!!!!!

Yes, Shannon came up and took us for walks with the our dog cousins, and Misty and the little kids came over and checked on us….

BUT IT JUST WASN’T THE BEST…………..

We needed Mom and Dad!

Then they were here!  Yippee!  Boomer laid all over Dad’s feet and I laid right by Mom’s chair until bedtime, then we both slept in the bedroom with OUR PEOPLE!

While they were gone we had another ‘gully-washer’ so none of us could go out and start putting the farm to bed.

Picking-up-tubes

Gradually the days dried out and then on the warmest day ever (and I do mean HOT) Mom and Boomer and I and DAD all went out to gather in the siphon tubes

Going-to-bed-!

and the roll-out ditches and to pick up all the orange dams.  Then we got the metal dams and stored them also.

Corn-on-the

Dad checked the corn out…still to moist, maybe by Halloween the harvest will start.

We have a new bird on the farm.  There isn’t much to say about him except he is really loud…talks all the time and does this drumming thing.  He is Dad’s turkey…he hangs out wherever Dad is…in the shop, in the other shop…out by the grain bins.  Fuzzy and I don’t care ‘cause WE HANG WITH MOM!

Shannon just came over and took Tom back…she has to take her turkey back as she really misses him.  Well, that works … Tom told us he really misses home!

Hi-Houston

The dog cousins come over for a walk every day.  We LOVE IT!

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday —Night Visitors

I moved us outside…that stay’n in the house was start’n to wear on me.  Boom, now, he says he could stay in the house always.  But, Mom and Dad, and even I were getting right tired of Boomer sitting around panting.  So out we went.  Two days and two nights now, but Mom says we will have to move back in tonight as another winter storm is coming in today…it’s supposed to start raining this afternoon and then change over to snow.

Phewy!

But I suppose I should be grateful for the house. And Mom who insists we stay inside when it’s nasty outside.

Now if it’s raining AND THUNDERING I would MUCH PREFER being inside and right ON MOM, if she would let me!

Shudder, shudder, shake, and shudder!

But…onto night-time living.

Freddy-Fox-3

Freddy Fox comes by;

Dog-Fox-Hummhe is pretty regular…

Freddy-Fox-1always around

Freddy-Fox-2early in the morning.

Female

The two Raccoons come in the yard…not all the time, but they do come.  We can smell them coming so Boomer and I take off running as fast as we can to halllllllllllllllllllllllo at them.

Rikki-The-RaccoonOur running down the corral line always makes them hop up on the top of corral and scamper off back to the fields.

Sam-at-night

Sammy-Sam the cat hangs out with us until mid-night….he like to makes sure there are no stray cats on the property.  Then he gets tired and heads in for the night.  That cat sure seems to sleep a lot!  Then he comes back out around 4:00 in the morning, since there is usually something going on just before dawn.

Cat-on-the-search

Between us dogs and Sam we hardly ever have any stray cats, but we do get them.

Skunk-1

We had this visitor….Dad helped him go to the Big Skunk heaven in the sky somewhere.

Skunk-2

Can you imagine what SKUNK HEAVEN must smell like…………….phew.

Boomer-Nose

We like to patrol the property

Nose(just the outbuildings and the house and yards) day and night.

Sameeee

In the daytime we get to chase squirrels.  We have a couple of ground squirrels and boy, are they ever fun.

Hidden-Hens

There is always something happening…the chickens, other birds,  Dovesand we get to see

Going-byDad heading out to do work.  (We don’t go with Dad, just Mom.)

Yes, Sir!  That’s our job and I’m proud of it!

Fuzzy-searchin

Fuzzy ….oh, yes…and Boomer
