Right on Time–Winter’s Chill–Friday, January 2, 2015

Coming-InThe Sunday after Christmas a strong winter storm made it’s way across the Utah border and onto the the Uncompahgre Plateau (Un-come-pah-gray accent on the pah). We watched it slowly fill in the canyons and draws, skimming the tops of the mesas until it started to push it’s way into the Roubidoux Canyon.  Once in the canyon it’s just a matter of a fast wind before it hits us.  We are the first mesa after you leave the canyon…you can see the flat lands below us (we are the last farm on California Mesa – just before the flat lands which drop off into Roubidoux Canyon.)

UpthereMonday morning the kids headed back in a snow storm, leaving well before the storm stopped.

By afternoon the Uncompahgre Plateau was white and we had about an inch of snow. Today we we have about and 1 1/2 inches— not a lot of snow.  But what we do have is COLD!

That typical cold, which freezes your skin the minute you head outside.  Your air puffs white and steamy as you breathe in and out, in and out.  With conditions just right you nose even freezes shut. Sure is a nasty feeling.

Dark

Boomer and I still go walking late at night.  The moon is almost full now, which allows me to walk without a flashlight—-although I do take one with me.

The air is crisp and full of sounds.  Sounds carry far in cold air…I can hear the coal train going through Delta on it’s way to Utah, I can hear the neighbors cows from over in the hollow, and the sound of cars and trucks passing way over there.

Evening-Light

Boomer and I walk along …he smells all the news along the way, I see the foot prints…bunny, mice, birds, deer, Sammy the cat’s paw prints,  and other canine prints…dog? Coyote? Wild dog packs? Cy-dogs?  I don’t pause to decide what I’m looking upon.  Lots of our neighbors allow their dogs to roam the farms (never a good idea–a dog chasing livestock is sure to be shot).

When the chill starts to be too much we head back toward the house and the heat of the wood fire. Boomer settles back down for a long winter nap. After filling the wood stove I like to sit by the window watching the frozen world full of white/silver moonlight; the cats sit with me–Sammy on top of the sofa and Monkey in the window.  We all stare outside marveling at the mid-night beauty of ice, snow, and sparkling white moonlight.

Storms and More Storms–Monday, November 24, 2014

LightThe weather people were right…storms and more storms following each other right on each other’s heels…

StormOur neighbor got his corn field baled just at the miserable winds arrived.  Although, the loose corn leaves would not have bothered us, it would have made a huge mess for the Church of the First Born on the corner by the corn field.

RainThe the rain and the sleet descended blocking our view.  That’s okay, the corn fields have blocked our view until just last week.  🙂

FlurriesThen the flurries started bringing snow to the foothills of Grand Mesa, the Uncompahgre Plateau (Un-come-pah-gray), and the area of the Black Canyon,  and rain to us.

Snow-1

Sunday was a good day to sit by the fire!

GoingLast night the storm left and

Morning another one arrived around 4 in the morning.  The sunrise around 6:30 was a promise of more storms—which is true, it’s snowing as I write this.

Later on today we will travel out and gather more corn for sampling the moisture.  A tedious routine now, but necessary.  Just as soon as the meter hits 14% the combine will roar into the life and the big orange truck will find it’s way out to the proper field, waiting for the corn to be loaded into the back.  As soon as the bed is full, the truck will head down to the Elevator…hopefully!  That’s the plan anyway.  Finger’s Crossed and Magic thoughts we can start again (I think I’ve said that at least two times before this time…shish!)

Canyons, Mesas and Hills April 27, 2014

Boy, is it ever COLD here!!!  Miserable in fact.  We started the heat back on in the house yesterday and have kept it going all night and even today.  I’m down to four logs of wood (that have been cut to length)  I was hoping the cut wood would last us until warm and settled weather of spring.  So far that isn’t going to be the case.

Last night Terry and I were dress in our winter clothes —carhart jackets, hooded sweatshirts, with warm winter hats pulled way down over our ears to do the irrigation water.  Miserable changing and resetting (melted snow) ice water in all those clothes.  But we had to do it or freeze.

Today there is edges of ice along the rows it’s so cold out here.

Of course, the fruit trees are in full bloom—apples, cherries, prunes, pears, and plums.  These trees are on our place and I don’t smudge.  I’m sure the orchardist are smudging or running wind fans to try and save their fruit and their living.

Out there on the ditch bank I had to marvel at the beauty that surrounds us—sometimes it is just stunning.

Canyons-3

The storm clouds had lifted a little bit allowing the sun to shine on the canyons, mesas, hills and the Uncompahgre Plateau (Un-come-pah-gray) highlighting the vistas surrounding our mesa.

There is something about being near these geological wonders that lifts my soul.  Something mystic, even exciting.  The canyons draw me to them speaking of mystery and and enchantment—opening my spirit to those who have traveled long long ago, within their captivating walls, or walked along the mesas and hills hunting, foraging, putting down roots, making a life for themselves.

Canyons2

Then there are all the wild animals and other creatures that complete the magic within the vista…calling to my soul!

Anyway….I couldn’t tarry long day dreaming, but for a spell, a very short spell, the canyons and mesas, the plateaus and the hills where filled with sunshine then the storm descended upon them also.

But, lucky for me, I was outside and saw…now you can too.

From the high mountain deserts of Western Colorado I sing to you a bright and very cold “Good Morning!”

You friend,

Linda

The very deep freeze is here and will stay for some time.  We woke-up to -6* (-21.11 c).  Cold is relative I know.  Some of you are seeing much colder temps than we are, but us, here…this is C.O.L.D!

Grand-Mesa-SnowIt looked like snow lingered on Grand Mesa for most of the day.  Today it is crisp and clear up there.

Terry and I were feeling housebound so we decided to go for a short drive…our neighbor was moving his 2-year olds into the corn field

Moving-CowsWe wanted to see what the snow level looked like ‘up-in-the-hills’.  It’s starting to look very nice.  If we continue to get more snow all through the winter water will not be as much of a concern as it was last year.

Come on snow!!

SnowI thought the trees were extremely beautiful all decked out in their winter finery.

Oh

Today I need to finish up some Christmas shopping. Then I will need to get things for both Christmas meals…the Christmas Eve Dinner and the Christmas Day Dinner.  I haven’t really decided which one to make the really big one–Turkey, ham, all the other dishes or the lighter one….lots of buffet foods…I’m leaning toward the Dinner at night and the buffet one on Christmas Day.

Usually, we have a treasure hunt in the afternoon of Christmas Day, but with the snow (and if it melts) the mud the thought just doesn’t appeal so I’m thinking we will play lots of games.  Games and snacking and just enjoying each other seems like the way to go for a long Christmas Day.

Wishing each of you a really nice day today,

Your friend,

Linda

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — The Living is Easy

We had snow!

Winter-4

Lots and lots of snow!

Mud-2

Then it turned to rain, which turned to mud!

Fog

Lately we have been having fog full of frozen crystals, then the sun comes out, then the fog comes back…days of this.

Frost

Fuzzy and I don’t mind!

Really we don’t.

Tree-2

We help Mom out…we decorated the tree, hung some light on the porch, helped cook meals…although that always gets us banished to ‘the other room’.

That is what Mom always says when she starts making those yummy smells from the kitchen… “Out boys, you have to go to the other room now!”

So we do…

Sleep

Going to the other room is okay doaky also…HEAT!!! AHHHHHHHHHH!

So it’s okay what goes on outside, for Fuzz and I…………….THE LIVING IS EASY!

OH!!
WAIT!!

I just about forgot.

Remember when I was new to the farm and I was terrified of the tractor and loader

You have GOT to see this!!!

Chaco and Balou meet the COMBINE!!!  (Turn your head so you can watch, it was taken with Shannon’s cell phone and Mom doesn’t know how to fix the video so it’s upside right)

Fuzzy and I rolled on the ground!  After all it is just a combine!!

Mom told us that wasn’t funny, after all she reminded me I was afraid of the tractor when I first got here!

Oh, well!

AHHHH-!

Back to all the warm heat from the wood stove!

Just hang’n around and enjoying winter!

Yesterday it started to rain.  It rained and rained, taking with it the lovely snow.

Mud-1

It rained and rained and rained…very miserable with a stiff nasty wind.

By nightfall we had nothing but mud

Mud-2

So we have gone from snow to mud in just one day!  That is always the bad part of snow…mud season!

I would have walked out to the fields to show you this, but I had to go upstairs and try and get some decent photos for you

Lots-1This is one of the corn fields from this summer

LotsWe have lots and lots of these huge wonderful birds (and bird poop).

2Last year I used to see them flying overhead and holler at them inviting them to come land on our farm—please come!  We will be good to you, the dogs don’t chase birds (unless it’s Hank) and I only want to take your photo! “Please come!” I would shout as they flew over my head.

Here is a very short video of the sounds they make (they are extremely noisy birds).  I took it while the grandchildren and I were taking a walk one cold winter day.  You can hear my voice and one of the grandchildren.

Now if the mud will just dry up…..

It’s still nasty and drizzly.  But we have BIRDS to entertain us!

The Adventures of Fuzzy and Boomer on Friday — Fall Storm

A-sleepThe day started like this…Boom was resting and resting and resting.  But Mom came out and started putting all the lawn furniture away…off we trotted to the old unused grain bin…first Boomer’s favorite bed, then his second favorite bed, then Dad’s favorite chair…after that all the tables and the benches.  Back and forth Boomer and I went with Mom.  We are very good helpers!!

Chimney

Then when Dad and Mom went off to finish Shannon’s fireplace

Windy-Fuzz

the wind started up…it blew me this way and that!  That is one thing about wind I really don’t like my fur going here and there and everywhere!

Gradually the day started to end as the wind got worse and worse.

Boomer and I decided we were NOT spending the night in the dog houses….no sire!  Not tonight!

winter-005

Because the wind and the rain and the ice were bad all night!!!

We woke up to a very cold morning!  Mom started a fire in the fireplace; we all toasted until I just got too hot and HAD to go outside!!!

Mom wonders if  the snow and ice  have finished off the apple harvest.  Mom says she hopes not.

More-walk

Anyway …

On-a-walk

Boomer and have stuff to do, we are off (he is that dot in the weeds) to check out how the farm and our wild friends did last night in that bad storm.  As you can see we are just cold here, the rain didn’t really wet anything down, just turned to ice.  As the sun has come up it melted.

La-Boo

“I’ll take it!” bayed Boomer.  “Give me sun any day!”

La-Fuzz

Me too…that was enough for a while!

The rains have arrived.  They threaten all day long, then around 8:00 in the evening they began.

Storms-2

We were lucky that it waited until we got home.  Just as I drove into the shed the rain started falling in a serious manner. Terry didn’t believe me when I said it was raining (he beat me in) but as we walked out of the building he became a believer.  🙂

Storms-1

Today Terry has a meeting, which leaves just the dogs and I to change the water…I hope it isn’t raining at that point.  I also dread the drive on a mud slick ditch bank, but I know it can be done.

Storm-3 Yes, I do!

Cold

Anyway, The Farmer’s Almanac has printed their predictions for the up and coming winter…I’m already ready for Spring.  I guess I shouldn’t be so selfish, as I know some of my  Dear Blog Friends are also ready for Spring—-they can only have Spring if we have Winter so I’ll slap on a Happy Face and ‘try’ to be okay with Winter.

Now for the Good part of Winter…if the predictions are true we will have snow, which means the reservoirs should recover some, which is a very good thing.

Fall is in the air!  Every day I see more yellow leaves turning up in the trees!

Yellow-Leaves

We had to run up to our lake on Grand Mesa

To-the-lake

while our company was here….stunningly we saw fresh snow on the ground.

Snow-on-the-mesa

The little chipmunks were very active – I think they now their time for storing is just about over.

Chipmunk

Terry and I decided that we just can’t get away from  the place to haul the much more needed firewood so we ordered more in, now we have a mess to sort through, but at least we are NOT having to go “GET IT”.  It will work this time for us … we will see what next year brings.

Leaves-turning

Misty had a terrible reaction to a new drug so she is with me today.  Please keep your prayers, magic thoughts and crossed fingers in place for a little while longer — we are desperately in need of them.
