A Wee Walk About—Tuesday, February 2, 2016

East-1Our air started chilling down on Saturday night…growing thick with mystery and the  promise of snow.  The gray-pink clouds began enfolding the earth, as the sun set assuring us of a blanket white enchantment.

SNow

Sunday the snow started falling; winter’s promise was still alive.

Terry and I spent Sunday warm and safe.  Although, a little on the bored side.

Boomer and I took a wee walk in the soft, muffled air.  Boomer doesn’t really walk with me, there is always so much more to see and do than stay right by my side.  Of course, now that cows are here he tends to not drift TOO far away!

Snow-2 Waking on the farm  is to walk to the sound of silence — for even the cows are quiet  in the falling snow.

SnowWalking is satisfying,  getting outside is delicious.

Snow-1

Monday morning the snow was thick and lush and rich.  As I shoveled the snow off the sidewalks there was only my footprints, Boomer’s and the cats!  (I enjoyed being the only human foot prints in the yard. 🙂 )

Snow! That gift of water for the spring, summer and fall!

A Mixed Blessing—Tuesday, January 5, 2016

It’s snowing here again.  A mixed blessing of sorts.  Storm(This is an old photo…from three weeks ago.)

The snow has warmed up the air a tad.  Always good.

Snowing

The gray light across the landscape has lifted the world from night shadows into a soft filter of sun.

Sunrise-4

The dying night  speaks volumes of what our frozen landscape is made up of—

View-3Vast fields of white and, of course, last years [still] standing corn.

A quote says it all….  “there’s just something beautiful about walking on snow that nobody else has walked on.  It makes you believe you are special”.—Carol Rifka Brunt, Tell the Wolves I’m Home.

So we move forward, you and I…day five of the year 2016. Searching for those little bits of joy that fill our lives with happiness.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—A Little of This and a Little of That

Not much happening here…

Snow1It snowed, then it got cold, colder, coldest

Bark

The UPS guy arrived…JOY!  I didn’t get to bark him in…I was sleeping next to the fireplace, toasting the pads on my paws when he showed up.  But I DID get to bark him OUT of the yard and down the lane

Cat-eyes

Which reminds me…why do I have to sleep on the floor and the cat gets to sleep on the sofa?

Squirrels-2

I’ve been checking on the squirrel brothers….lots!  They like to play in the woodpile, so I hang out there and try to play with them

Sam-the-kitty-cat

Sam and I are the only ones who go outside.  Sam doesn’t like a litter box and I don’t use one

Lights-1

Mom has the tree up.  Monkey keeps taking the ornaments off the lower branches—I don’t even DARE to think about doing something like that!

Cats get away with tons of stuff!  Tons!

Winter-sun1

The days are short, but really they are Long, Longer, Longerer…I’m ready for action!!

Until then…I’ll just sleep by the fire and toast my pads.

A Frozen World—Wednesday, December, 16, 2015

YellowAfter a day of snow and wind…mostly wind, we woke to snow scattered here and there in small little drifts.

18Brown patches of earth scattered in the tattered and bunched snow.

But the sun came up all red and pink and gold, causing sparkles on the snow drifts, the brown frozen earth appears a softer brown than the melted dark mud will appear (if we warm up.)

21

The wind-snapped and bedraggled corn reflected the morning light, echoing the glow coming over the mountains, wherein lays Gunnison, Colorado, and a wee bit closer, the Black Canyon.

Terry is going out to check the corn, thinking maybe this cold has driven down the  moisture. While he is doing that I will go sweep out the bed of the grain truck, then with the bed facing the rising sun we are hoping the wood will dry.

If this all comes together, maybe, just maybe…harvest can begin.

Corn-1What a crazy time of the year to [still] be hoping to get the corn in.

Oh, well, it is what it is.

Wishing you a good one today,

Love,

Linda

It’s Snowing Here—Tuesday, December 15, 2015

lights1.jpg

We woke up to a dark covered sky this morning.  But as the day woke-up, the sky lightening into a white canvas, the snow has started falling.

Doing my chores the snow whispered around me and my footsteps silent in the crisp breeze.

They say once this snow has stopped the air will turn chillingly cold.  But until then…..

I must admit I take a childish delight in being able to walk in virgin snow.

A Storm Rolled in Last Night—-Wednesday, November 11, 2015

We woke up to snow this morning!  Although it IS melting, it’s still snow.  Sure seems early this year.

Off-we-goTerry and I worked on the fire roads.  We have one that is a pain in the ….well, you know what.

Fire-road-1Yep, Terry is stuck…that’s a chain, whereby I’m pulling him out. This particular spot is a real struggle.  Twice a year we clear and clean and create making it safe to get to the rest of the farm.

Fire is a mighty and very scary thing.

Helping-MomBoomer worked right along side of us, up and down, back and forth…over and over again.

Right now the wind is blowing, sharp and cold; pushing the clouds toward the north and the east, mud is appearing where the snow once was.  Work on the fire roads has ended for the year.

The World Settled into Silence—Thursday, November 5, 2015

hhIt rained off and on all day yesterday,  and way into the night.

We actually woke up to rain. The air rich with the smell of ozone and the dried leaves, corn stalks and ears; now absorbed with water.

Snow-2

Then there came a feel of snow in the air.

Although, the sky was the same leaded gray the air itself had changed. A heaviness and feeling of something different; colder/sharper.

Silence, no small voices of birds or rustling of little creatures, as the crystals in the clouds changed from water to ice.

Snow-1

Then it came, sudden and hushed, flurries of little tiny noiseless flakes, whirling out of the air.

CThe sun is out now (as I type), the sounds of water returning, running off our metal roof, the snow is melting adding to the mud, flatting the fallen leaves.

The weather people were right.  An early winter storm has arrived.

The Adventures of Boomer on Friday—Wet/Cold/Snow/Wind/Rain/Mud

Play I don’t have much to say today.  We, meaning Mom, Dad and Myself, are still trying to get the water down the fields, morning and night, sometimes noon and afternoon.

Snowing

I like irrigation season, but I sure don’t like this rain/snow/wind/rain/snow/mud stuff we are having now.  I still go, but I get really wet—my belly and my legs.  I need longer legs, I guess.

7

(There is mud out there, don’t let this fool you.)

Anyway, it’s so nasty and wet today, Mom told me I had to STAY at the house, ON my bed, in my BEDROOM.  She didn’t know but I STAYED right by the wood stove until I heard the 4-wheelers drive into the yard, then I slipped ever so quickly onto my bed in my bedroom.

TeeHee

There I was sitting there like I was ready to go outside, just as innocent as you please.  Mom came in and gave me lots of pets and a hug; said I was a good doggie all nice and dry and warm.  I agree—good dog, dry, warm…I gave her a huge smile and a kiss on the hands!

Other than lots of sleeping, not much going on.  I think the cats have it figured out…Mom and Dad get cold, wet and muddy.  We stay warm and dry!

Sun(What we woke up too.)

As February Leaves—Thursday, February 26, 2015

Snow-in-the-canyonWinter is still with us….flinging flakes of very wet snow here and there in a willy-nilly sort of pattern.

Storm-on-the-PlateauWind with very icy fingers stab and pull at you and every other living thing.

I do believe winter is throwing a huge fit, because you know…really we all know …that the time has come for Winter to leave.  It doesn’t matter how ugly and how hard winter demands for us to pay attention Winter IS in charge.  Stamping its blue and icy foot..the earth is tilting ever so slowly.

YesThe sun moving toward the warm point of spring and then summer, casts brilliant colors, which fiercely sends warning sounds, for winter to calm down.  Enough is enough.

The weather people are saying winter is still very preoccupied trying to keep a foothold on our part of the world–this bitter, cold tantrum will weaken and strengthen over several more days, then the middle (Wednesday) of the first week in March, the sun and the earth will send warmth and comfort back to the land with temperatures rising into the 50’s for several days.  Perfect for drying up snow and mud.

So go ahead and throw a fit, make it a good one, for soon you, Old Man Winter, will be banished to other parts and the gentle cherub of Spring will dance it’s way into our hearts and souls.

Go Ahead, spend yourself out —soon you stay in your room and cry huge hiccuping sobs until you are spent and need to rest to recover.  We will just wait you out.

Linda

Winter Returned—Monday, February 23, 2015

SnowIt started snowing hard yesterday afternoon flinging the snow into the night and on to the morning, where it is still snowing today.  Big soft wet flakes of pristine whiteness.

Of course there are more babies out there…we counted three, just hours old, but up and following the Mom.  That is in the bunch close to the house.  The older calf is somewhere else, I haven’t seen it this morning.

Winter has returned here.  Storm warnings are until tomorrow with 18″ on Cerro Summit.  Water should be good this year. 🙂
